The critical passion is definitely there for Cage, but it hasn't translated to the industry. Cage didn't even make the longlist for BAFTA despite being eligible (on another note, Simon Rex was apparently not SAG-eligible, according to some rumblings). I will not be getting my hopes up that he sneaks that fifth slot, but to be fair, all of the other contenders for it have massive red flags as well. If he had won at least one of the big three, I'd be more inclined to agree that he has a shot, but I really don't think NEON is pushing hard enough... It seems like they've put all of their eggs into the Spencer/Stewart basket.

Yeah, I think we all might be deluding ourselves into thinking the Academy will have an inspired stroke of genius at nominating Cage, but the precursors haven't borne that out. It'll probably be DiCaprio, with an outside shot at Dinklage or Bardem . . . but whatever, I'll ride this pig to victory or Valhalla.

Cage didn't even get the Spirit nomination, that's all you need to know.

Cage didn't even get the Spirit nomination, that's all you need to know. Neither did Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me?... Also, Olivia Colman missed the BIFA nominations last year for The Father... Granted, those performances had support elsewhere, but I certainly don't buy the argument that it's "all you need to know."

Cage is a very, very long shot, clearly behind Di Caprio, Bardem and Dinkage at least.
But then again, he's less of a long shot than Stansfield being nominated as supporting last year, so...

Cage didn't even get the Spirit nomination, that's all you need to know. I'm not predicting Cage but Spirits are hardly influential on Oscar race. Colman also missed this year, Dafoe missed for "The Florida Project". The list is long.
