Is anyone else surprised that Joaquin Phoenix isn’t more of a contender? He’s coming off of a Best Actor Oscar and delivered a pretty great and grounded performance is a polar opposite role. I’d think he’d be more part of the conversation. He's my 3rd of the year on merit (behind Cumby and Rex) but his movie is so arty and its the same studio as Macbeth.........A24 are kind of a joke Love the movie and performance

I’d think he’d be more part of the conversation. Not really. Even looking beyond the film itself not seeming to grab a hold even in places where it was assumed to do well, Phoenix's win always felt like the Academy's way to recognize his career without feeling like they needed to consistently nominate a guy who clearly doesn't care about being feted.

I’d think he’d be more part of the conversation. I think he needed his film to be an overall stronger contender. Like there’s a pretty decent chance that all 5 nominees end up coming from BP noms. Also, A24 are still kind of slacking when it comes to campaigning. They’ve been off their game for the last few years.

Had an Oscar dream last night (maybe for the first time ever, at least I can't remember it happening before)...DiCaprio was snubbed and the one nominated was Nic Cage. The dream felt hella real. And I'm not stanning either of these performances. And this night it's Orthodox Christmas. Something to think about

Variety mentions 15 different actors. Their first five were Will Smith (donned as the front-runner), Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, Benedict Cumberbatach, and Bradley Cooper.

Variety is just pushing Cooper.
The fifth spot is between Dinklage, DiCaprio, and Cage.

Yeah, Cooper at #5 is just nonsense. Was this Clayton again??

He is a pretty popular actor and his film is expected to get at least 4 Oscar nominations. They did mention Dinklage 6th and Dicaprio 7th.
Are we even sure that Denzel Washington is that 4th spot?

But AMPAS is notorious for surprise nods. No one predicted LaKeith Stanfield last year. Cooper is high profile enough that if he misses for Nightmare Alley, he can sneak in Supporting for Licorice Pizza.

Folks follow all these precursors while ignoring the history of the Academy.

of course anything's possible, but if there's going to be a surprise it's going to be Phoenix or Cage.

I don’t think he gets in for either, but he’s more likely for Licorice Pizza than Nightmare Alley. Supporting is weaker, and Licorice is the much stronger film.

Just to add to that, yes the Academy can throw a surprise out, but they’re usually attached to a BP nominee. Weaver, de Tavira, Stanfield etc.

Which 4?? I think it gets 2 techs max and that’s it.

personally I have NA as only safe for production design but it could even miss that. I'm also predicting it for cinematography but it's on the outside and could easily miss and for the 5th slot in makeup because that shortlist was so weak. It had a rough day with the shortlists. No score, no VFX, no sound. Costume is possible but I'm betting against it.

You're thinking Production Design, Costumes and Makeup? 'Cause I feel that the only kinda sorta guaranteed nomination for it is only Production Design.
