He should deeply regret it. Yes I’m sure he’s going to hate having a second Oscar on his mantle. He's apologized to the family for the film's depiction. Don't assume that everyone shares your lack of compunction.

What's the last time a foreign language, black and white, slow cinema (wannabe) movie with zero recognizable actors won Best Picture? Refresh my memory. Before last year and the year before, what's the last time a fantasy film featuring bestiality or an indie about a gay black man with zero recognisable actors won? Roma hits all the right social commentary cues even more than The Shape of Water did. All the men in Roma are total assholes and it's from MEXICO for god's sake. This final point is a good one. I still don't think it'll be enough but we'll see. Every 50+ year old white person I've seen come out of Green Book is in a state of rapture, ecstatically proclaiming it one of the best movies they've ever seen. I see that translating to an Oscar victory given the demographics of the Academy

He apologized to the family for if they were offended at all which wasn’t his intention and said he wish he had consulted them. More recently he added this about the film:

Officially switching from Adams to Blunt at the last minute after itching to do it for weeks was my one good gut call of the season. She's a worthy winner, and if she'd made the Oscar lineup over de Tavira I'd probably be predicting her to win.
Malek, Close and Ali were all expected.
I thought they'd go with ASIB for Ensemble, though, but nope. That went 0/4, ouch.
Roma benefits big time from this, because nothing else rises. Green Book won its one prize but was already predicted to get that anyways, and BlacKkKlansman remains winless.

Also, how many Oscars does Roma have to win before we can finally stop wondering how the industry feels about it and if it's being watched? If we all wake up on February 25th in a world in which Alfonso Cuarón is a 5-time Oscar winner, do we still get to have regular debates about how there's no way to know for sure if Roma is well-liked because it didn't get an Editing nomination? Maybe if one of the boys got nominated for Supporting Actor we'd reconsider.
