I don't think that Rolling Stone piece will carry any weight at all if his criminal charges are dismissed. They supposedly interviewed 40 people about his alleged bad behaviour since college, and couldn't even get 1 of them to go on the record (by naming themselves). That says more about the shakiness of the investigative journalism than Majors himself. It made it feel more like a hit piece than a smoking gun. You could write unsubstantiated, hearsay heavy articles like that about 90% of people in Hollywood, most of them whom would have interacted with people over their careers or since college that found them rude, abrasive, unpleasant to be around etc. Shit, you could write an article like that about Emma Roberts, except you'd actually be able to find several people willing to go on record and say she's a rude, aggressive b*tch. Jonathan Majors is not so all-powerful a celebrity that you can't find one person willing to go on the record about his "terrible" behavior in a serious investigative piece, if it's as bad as claimed. If he gets off, and most importantly if Disney/MCU stick by him (which by all accounts they will. So they probably know his odds for acquittal are high), he may still have a hard time getting back to where he was as some mud always sticks even if you are found innocent, but there will undoubtedly be an outpouring of sympathy for him, since more recent evidence suggests his ex-girlfriend was not only lying, but coached by police officers on the scene to accuse him. But I don't think a Rolling Stone article with 40 people willing to badmouth him, but none of them willing to go on record is going to stick the landing. Just my opinion anyway. Frankly it probably is too late for him. The problem is he was building clout, he didn't already have it fully, like say Mel Gibson who was able to get an Oscar nomination even after everything. Majors got derailed at the worst possible time career-wise, in that he was famous enough for the charges to be big news, but not famous/well liked enough for people to want to "separate the art from the artist" it would have to take dump truck filled with clear cut evidence for the public perspective to swing in a positive direction for him, and even then it might not be enough.

If....and it's a big If, what Jeff Snieder says holds true and Jonathan Majors does get exonerated/or his case dimissed at his next hearing....can he surge back into the race with Magazine Dreams which is still scheduled for a December release? Between Magazine Dreams, Ant-Man : Quantumania, Creed 3 and the praise he's getting this week for his work in Loki Season 2, he easily should have staked his claim to being the actor/star of the year. Yet his assault charge put a cloud over all of that. If he's cleared, does the industry fall back behind him in a show of support for having his stellar year derailed with Magazine Dreams, which was touted as a likely Oscar nod for him before his charges? Or will he still struggle to regain his momentum? Yeah, there's almost no shot of a Jonathan Majors rehabilitation campaign this year. Even if he beats the charges in court, he still has a mountain of bad press hanging over him.

Majors is obviously not in - I like people saying "probably" - we're gettng very milquetoast in our old age I'm afraid ...........he's not even close ....not this year or next year........or conceivably, possbly not ever (?) - particularly this year where it's too hot and 2 of the 5 nominees may be PoC anyway (Domingo and Wright) .....btw that's partially because people do get nominated - sometimes - for their race - among many other things - like I said 3 years ago - and I was right - while you were busy calling me a racist - yawn .........but the good news is you can apologize......DM me,k?...let's be friends ....or not I'm cool either way......shrug I say his all the time - no one has "the right" to an acting career not even Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman ffs.......it's unfortunate on our Intersectional Scale of Oppression and Dumbfnckism but alas ........he's 100% out.......

You do know it's really fucking gross and offensive that you bring up race every single time a black actor/actress is talked about for a nomination . You know exactly what you are doing. And you are a fucking racist. Anyone with any basic or even mild observational capacity can work that out. But on here you are pretty much that cranky racist old uncle/grandpa that people just kind excuse and let be comfortable under their guise of not being "politically correct", because we all know someone like that in our family and have to tolerate it. You used to hide your racism much, much better on IMDB. On Movie Awards Redux, you might as well be wearing a KKK hood. Guess old age has you with no fucks left to give.

Or will he still struggle to regain his momentum? As far as I can see, the best actor race boils to down to 5 of these 8 contenders: Bradley Cooper, Leonardo Dicaprio, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, Joaquin Phoenix, Andrew Scott, and Jeffrey Wright.
I am about 99% sure, Cooper-Dicaprio-Murphy will squeeze in there. Pretty much every year, we have at least one "comedy/musical performance". Giamatti or Wright will fulfill that quota.
Domingo and Scott are getting rave reviews for their quality and emotional performances. Next month we have Napoleon out. If the movie is as badass as the trailers, I think Phoenix gets into the Best Actor line-up. That really doesn't leave room for anybody else.
I do not know much about this Jonathan Majors situation. As people may know, I absolutely detest the concept of being cancelled based on an accusation. Due process needs to come first and foremost.

He has no chance for Magazine Dreams. Yeah, Searchlight's not going to bother with Magazine Dreams. They've got Poor Things in general and Andrew Scott as their critically-lauded Best Actor pony for All of Us Strangers (a film that could conceivably overperform with nominations come Oscar morning). In the unlikely event that Majors beats the rap and the industry forgets about the other bad press, Magazine Dreams would just be there as a reminder of his talent and we'd just see how things shook out for him moving forward.

He has no chance for Magazine Dreams. If Majors beats the charges, his career is 100% going to survive in a major (pun intended) way. Majors Kang character is literally supppoised to be the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the next 6 or 7 years. He's going to be the villain that affects everything. The next Avengers movie is even named after his character ... Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
Disney can't/won't drop Majors if he is acquitted. His Marvel/Disney gig is going to make him insanely wealthy . Will he be embraced for awards jn the future? Who knows. But his career as a working star actor won't need reviving if he beats the charges. His Disney/Marvel contract guarantees that. I'm personally not really sold on him being likely to get back into this season's Oscar race with Magazine Dreams...but it's worth considering if he might end up as a wildcard to be nominated if he beats his charges and gets a strong push based on that. After Andrea Riseborough this year got a last minute Oscar nomination out of nowhere (displacing stronger contenders) for a movie that made 5 dollars and nobody saw, I'm surprised people can totally dismiss the possibility of Majors being a cause celebre among his peers.

He'd need the accuser basically to recant, or some sort of perfect video evidence to show his innocence for all that to happen, particularly for him to become some sort of Riseborough case where flocks of high profile actors are pushing for him. Just being found "not guilty" probably won't be enough, particularly when the very next story could be "Majors accuser intends to appeal verdict".

The video evidence suggesting Majors is innocent and his ex-girlfriend is lying is already out there. It's why most people following the case think Majors is going to get off. The case against him at this point is insanely weak. His ex-girlfriend has gone back to the UK (where she's from) and isn't likely to come back, because the NYPD have confirmed that there is probable cause to arrest her for assaulting Majors (he took pictures of the injuries he said she gave him), and also stealing from him (After the alleged incident, she went clubbing on Majors credit card, and he alleges she stole some valuables and jewellery from his apartment).

pupdurcs, even if the accuser recants, there's still too much bad press out there for them to immediately walk back. Majors has a reputation from his Yale theater days that billowed out in the wake of his accusations that had nothing to do with this incident, and even if all charges are dismissed, the fact remains that he's also not as firmly established as someone like a Mel Gibson or a Sean Penn where he can take the hit to his reputation and still maintain a meteoric trajectory. Even if he is innocent, his name is going to be tainted for a long time. People are going to see his name and immediately associate it with these actions. I mean, there was that video that came out where he broke up that fight at the high school and it was seen as a pretty hilarious PR stunt.

Oh, I understand that, which is why I said "mud sticks", even if he's completely exonerated (which looks very likely that he will be). A lot of people aren't following his case that closely, and the very real video evidence suggesting his innocence has gotten nowhere as much press coverage as the accusations suggesting his guilt. Which is par for the course, no matter how unfair it may be But at the same time, Majors has the money and resources to sue the fuck out of people for this shitshow if he's exonerated, and I think that will go a long way to restoring his reputation with the public in the long run if he does. At this point, if his case is dropped, he's got cause to sue the New York City District Attorneys Office for hiding the video evidence showing his ex-girlfriend unharmed. And also to sue the New York City Police Department, who were caught on their bodycams coaching his ex-girlfriend to accuse him of assaulting her, even though she initially repeated over a dozen times that she couldn't remember how she got her injuries.

And also to sue the New York City Police Department, who were caught on their bodycams coaching his ex-girlfriend to accuse him of assaulting her, even though she initially repeated over a dozen times that she couldn't remember how she got her injuries. The whole situation is difficult to parse out because even if Majors is exonerated in full here, that doesn't invalidate the other criticisms that have followed him in regards to his reputation from Yale (which I am not sure if he ever addressed or not; I haven't been following much of this case since the news broke) and whether other industry fixtures are willing to step up for him. Has he developed strong enough relationships with respected figures in the business to go to bat for him to help restore him, the way Gibson did for RDJ and the way, later on, that RDJ/Jodie Foster did for Gibson, etc.? If we assume that Majors is exonerated and not just have the case dropped (two different things, which I think is the very clear distinction), what does Majors's path to redemption look like? Does he make a public show of his innocence and fight the powers-that-be who tried to fuck him over? If he does that, he better damn sure make sure that he's ironclad in all other arenas, because I feel like if those aforementioned Yale rumours have any weight, that'd just muddy the waters further. Majors has to be not only certain of proving his innocence in this respect, but in pretty much all other respects. The alternative would be to keep his head down, cash those Marvel checks, let the Disney PR machine work its magic if he's still kept on as Kang (this will be the key thing; if Marvel dumps him, that shows a lack of confidence from Disney and that's pretty much a death knell), and just quietly carve out a niche in indie projects for a while until something remotely baity comes to the fore a few years down the line.

I'm on a Matt Damon kick right now, and I think Air is very much the kind of movie that can come back in the conversation in a very big way (people have stopped talking about it as much since all the festival films came out, but for some reason, I think it'll have a resurgence with the industry awards). The movie is AMPAS catnip.
I feel Damon is in a good position to be rewarded with for a strong year, either with a supporting nomination for Oppenheimer, or a Best Actor nod for Air. So he's a factor in both the male actor races this year, as far as nominations go.

From what I've heard, Amazon's cut their planned Air FYC screenings down by half. I feel like they're not going to be putting too much effort into it. It could regain momentum at the industry awards, but the issue is that it's such an early release and we only really see early releases back if perceived competition has fallen by the wayside, and that really hasn't happened this year. Everything's either met or exceeded expectations. I think Air's ceiling is a stray Viola Davis nomination, and I don't even think that's happening (although she's almost certainly getting in at SAG). Damon is a more distinct possibility for something like Oppenheimer, though I think they know Downey, Jr. is so win-competitive that I don't see them really pushing Damon as well. If Damon does get in, then I think that'll be due to a massive love for the movie that he'd get swept up on it. It's definitely possible but I'd have him in the 8-10 range right now, whereas I really don't think he's even on the radar for Air. It's been a good couple of years for Damon, but I'm still thinking he misses.

Instead, they've gotten raves and we've added a new serious contender in Wright. It seems more likely it will be ignored/forgotten about.

I’m still sticking with my old 5
Murphy Dicaprio Giamatti Cooper Domingo
I’ve seen people replacing Domingo with Wright and it’s tempting but I just hear Domingo is soooo baity and I think people are overstating the “weakness” of his film. It’s not getting a BP nod but this isn’t a “The Son” or a “J. Edgar” we are talking about here. It’s 92% on rotten tomatoes. It’s more of a “Captain Fantastic” or a “The Founder” I think. Every year at least one nominee isn’t in a Best Picture nominee.
Also Scott sneaking in would not shock me.

Domingo's got the role, Scott has the reviews in a critical darling (and watch out for him at BAFTA), and Wright has the overdue narrative in the TIFF crowdpleaser. The pendulum could literally swing anywhere at this point.

These studios have enough money to get screeners to everybody and make FYC ads for all their contenders. Netflix is going to want both nominated. Look at last year at Netflix. They didn’t even have All Quiet on their main page until Bafta nominations and they instead they had Glass Onion. It could still be any of those three in the last spot but I think some are being too dismissive of Domingo. Like I said people get nominated for non BP contenders all the time. Statistically I think is less likely all the nominees are in BP nominees.

That being said I’m THIS close to changing to Wright. Domingo is on thin ice and will need to have a flawless precursor season.

From Deadline today - as one of our most fascinating posters j/k would say - we know that - this is nothing - it's a Nothingburger .....probably a nothing in 2024 too....... To no surprise, Searchlight won’t be opening the actor’s Sundance critically acclaimed drama Magazine Dreams on Dec. 8 as Majors faces a trail date on Nov. 29 for a domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend from March this year. No word on what happens next to Magazine Dreams
