I like it a lot. I would have preferred Hugh Jackman honestly because his voice is more gruff and he would have pulled off "Be Prepared" in spades, but Ejiofor has proved to play very complex antagonists before.
That said...
I saw someone suggest Willem Dafoe and the fact we won't get that honestly is making me beyond upset and distraught.
Everyone else is perfectly cast though, just like The Jungle Book, each actor seems to have qualities that embody the character especially John Oliver as Zazu. I love they brought back JEJ, but I don't think it was that necessary. My choice was Russell Crowe.

Thank God it's not Jackman as was rumoured, so that I never ever have to watch that thing

Honestly? It irritates me. Not because of Ejiofor's involvement, but because they are keeping James Earl Jones but not Jeremy Irons, when both are equally iconic in their respective roles. If Irons doesn't want to reprise his role, I get it, but from what I've been able to tell, he hasn't been approached or considered.
Ejiofor is a major upgrade from Jackman, whose voice is all kinds of wrong for Scar.
On a side-note: the hyenas need to be played by Kaitlin Olson, Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day. It needs to happen.

I know nothing about the movie or casting outside of reading this thread, but my guess is that they want a black cast. To answer the OP, though: I think it's great casting, but I think every Disney remake outside of Pete's Dragon has sucked major ass. So although I think he'll be great in this role like he is in all of his others (I believe that he can make Scar scary), I reserve judgment on the movie.

I'm warming up to it. I was expecting them to go with the obvious Cumberbatch (or even David Oyelowo, considering his history with Star Wars Rebels), but I like them going for a different kind of Scar for this one. Ejiofor's got a great presence, and I'm excited to see him play a full-on villain (even Mordo's gotta prove himself yet).
Im just not sold on the film yet. In theory, I should be. Based on my favorite Disney movie, I loved and was pleasantly surprised by The Jungle Book, and like you said, everyone they've picked so far have been great choices for these characters. I'm just entirely apathetic to it. Perhaps more so than Beauty and the Beast. And I still don't think they justified that one, but you could at least argue it's right to exist (what with how long they tried going for the Broadway version). This... this just feels like they can, so they are.

I had Viola Davis as the obvious choice, but this works just as wel. And Jon Kani was cast as Rafiki. It's disappointing they've decided against the perfect chance to cast Morgan Freeman in that role, and it would really boost the star power, but Kani sounds enough like Robert Guillaume so I'm not too upset. As I've said about Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, it's disappointing to think it didn't go to someone like Willem Dafoe, but it's also pretty inspired and we'll see how it'll all work out once the film is released.

I'm so beyond apathetic to this, but I really want this movie to surprise me. And I'll admit, so far, the casting is on friggin' point.

Not bad, he can play sinister pretty well, but I would have preferred if Irons could have reprised his role. Oh well.

The more I think about it, the more I love it.
And as much as I loved Irons, let's be real... I'm glad he's not coming back. If they would have gone to so much trouble just to get the old cast back together, why even recast many of the roles at all? Why not just bring back Broderick or Lane? Why not bring back Guillaume? As much as I loved those guys, if the movie needs them back in order to stand, then that'll just make it seem even more pointless than it is, which runs the risk of it becoming phoned in, since they've already covered this ground before*. James Earl Jones I'm willing to let slide, because there's no one with his caliber of voice (though personally, I'd have lobbied for Djimon Hounsou to bring Mufasa new life), but everyone else, I'm totally fine with them venturing into their own new path.
* This is also the reason I do not want Hans Zimmer coming back. It'd be sad to toss his old themes out, and Lion King was the best work of his career, but I don't trust the Hans we have nowadays (the same Hans responsible for Man of Steel) to do justice to that same music.

Ben Mendelson was my choice. It be good casting for Scar if Ejiofor signs on.

That’s another VFX Oscar right there. Holy crap! Yup. Disney doesn’t even have to campaign for that one. Now the real question is do they submit it for animated film? While it’d be an easy nomination, my instinct says Disney will want to “take this movie seriously” as an awards contender and they’ll just submit it to snag a boatload of techs and fingers crossed wishful thinking on above the line categories.
