This is an insanely high quality bunch. I haven't seen Magnolia, but from the other eight, six of them I would consider among my all-time greats, with Adams and Reynolds also very good too.
So that leaves me having to eliminate four greats. So tough! Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is getting one of my votes as that is my favourite performance of the bunch. I'm cutting the other performance from Day-Lewis, as he's not even my win in his year. Hoffman, brilliant as he is, isn't as good as his co-lead so he's out.
So it's a fight between Wacky, Moore and Manville. I'll give it to Moore as I've loved her work the longest of them all.

Gotta go with Plainview and Freddie, who are on a class all on their own, but these are all damn fine performances. Honorable mentions especially to Hoffman, Manville, and Moore.

Hey Johnny, do yourself a favour...watch Magnolia!
This is such a fantastic group. I'd rank them:
1) Joaquin Phoenix 2) Philip Seymour Hoffman 3) DDL (Phantom Thread) 4) Tom Cruise 5) Julianne Moore 6) DDL (There Will Be Blood) 7) Lesley Manville 8) Amy Adams 9) Burt Reynolds
All were hugely deserving of their nominations.

My favorite's a tie between Cruise and Phoenix. Both are among the best performances I've ever seen.
All of the other ones listed are really good too.

the oilman and the writer, doctor, nuclear physicist, theoretical philosopher, cult leader, but above all, a man.

This was really hard. Thought about throwing bones to Adams, Cruise, or Manville. Ultimately I had to double up on DDL, though, both those performances are too good to not vote for them.
