Lawrence in SLP is magnificent, and I also really like Bale in The Fighter.

Bale in The Fighter is a cartoon. He's a cartoon in American Hustle too, but that movie calls for a cartoon and he delivers splendidly.

De Niro, easily. By far the best part of Silvers Lining Playbook.

Bale, The Fighter (my winner in 2010) Adams, American Hustle (I barely nominate her in 2013) but yikes, after that, how did these people get nominated for Oscars?

Amy Adams in American Hustle is one of the greatest performances of this decade.

Amy Adams in The Fighter. All the rest are either mediocre or absolutely terrible.

Amy Adams in American Hustle is one of the greatest performances of this decade. I wouldn't go quite that far, but I would absolutely call it underrated (discounting the nomination).

I've rarely seen so many overrated performances listed one after another, David O. Russell definitely has a knack for that.
It's between Bale (The Fighter) and Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), again, both hugely overated but still overall better performances than the rest. I'll go with Bale.

It's between Bale (The Fighter) and Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), again, both hugely overated but still overall better performances than the rest. I'll go with Bale. It's bizarre isn't it. It's like the industry and Oscars were under some temporary mass hypnosis for a couple of years that made them perceive O Russell as the second coming of Scorsese and every performance in his film as Oscar calibre. Most of these performances are perfectly OK. But they are ordinary enough that you could find then in any competently directed and acted movie. Katherine Heigl must wonder how she doesn't have an Oscar if Jennifer Lawrence can win for Silver Linings Playbook. Bale in The Fighter gets it purely on effort, but as you say, it's still somewhat overrated.
