I expect all of you in this thread to pay for my counselling over the next few weeks.
I don't even know how to explain what happened in that second set. She basically just handed her the championship. :/ It didn't even look like age/Sjogren's-related fatigue, just a loss of focus and will. At the very, very least, I wanted more of a match.
So disappointed for Mother but congrats to Mugu who played well this entire 2nd week of the tournament and deserved her win.
I guess there's always the US Open!!!!!!!! She knows those Miami hardcourts well. Euch.
[PS could have done with less shots of ConCHEATER Martinez, Channel 7]
Neither of my faves won the finals, but more than that I just wish that the matches were less anticlimactic. I know it doesn't always go that way and that often the best and most competitive face-offs are in the early rounds.. but what looked like they'd be closely-contested games turned out to be unremarkable serve-a-thons.
Given the way both the mens and especially the women's draws have gone (surprise upsets, weird ranking changes, unexpected young talents coming through) the US Open is going to be an interesting way to cap off the GS season. I'm looking forward to seeing who can maintain their current level, who will be out to prove something, etc.
