stephen - Frances Fisher genuinely did break the rules, though - I don't think it would be appropriate for the Academy to ignore that. Sure. And I am fine with Fisher being disciplined because she overstepped boundaries (as silly as those boundaries are when compared to the gladhanding and undermining studios will do behind the scenes). But we have precedent here of people doing the exact same thing without stripping the nomination away. In 2003, an FYC ad ran for Shohreh Aghdashloo which did the exact same thing.Right. And it's not like they retroactively revoked Shakespeare in Love's Best Picture win - Riseborough herself shouldn't be punished here.

Right. And it's not like they retroactively revoked Shakespeare in Love's Best Picture win - Riseborough herself shouldn't be punished here.i Indeed. And for what it's worth, I feel like what Fisher did wasn't initially out-of-bounds -- it's only when people were calling her out for Davis and Deadwyler potentially missing that she brought them up individually in a later post, along with Yeoh and Blanchett. But she did it in a rather informal manner, as opposed to the official studio FYC for Aghdashloo. Social media is part of our existence, and people use it in much the same way to just speak informally as they do in official capacities. But surely, when discussing nominations among their peers in the Academy, people aren't avoiding talking about the other nominees in the process.

Honestly, I suspect that Yeoh and Blanchett were so far ahead of the rest that literally, a few dozen votes could've decided the remaining spots. But it should be noted that while Deadwyler certainly suffered here for being what was essentially the only thing her film really had in contention, Davis's film was completely blanked. Across the board. Not a single nomination for any of its techs. I just don't think they vibed with The Woman King. Momentum really did decide this one. Riseborough proved that the months-long song-and-dance can be skipped if one marshals their resources at the right time (which completely undercuts the industry's demand and desire for the campaign circuit, which is incredibly lucrative for them -- that is what they're really investigating and not the idea that white people rallied to block two black women from being nominated in Best Actress), and Williams's camp must have seriously went into overdrive when she missed SAG and BAFTA. Ana de Armas was overlooked by pundits and predictors most of the season because of the bad buzz around her film but she had Netflix money and the baitiest role in contention (a film about the industry, no less!) and she had made every major precursor despite all the negative buzz, and people overlooked what was a very strong third-placer there. Oscar nomination voting closed before the BAFTA nominations were revealed, so Williams missing BAFTA wasn't a factor for her at all. True, but the SAG miss and the underperformance of The Fabelmans on the BAFTA longlists had to have sent them into panic mode.

Didn't say okay guys we just need to get 218 people to rank her first. People probably had no clue how it worked now you have a group of people telling people to pretty much switch ranking.

I actually think Fisher should only get a warning tbh - though I guess a year would be "reasonable" in this virtue signaling nonsense........the Academy has to know their own ludicrous hypocrisy here. They're encouragng people to look at their BS "rules" ....and it's not a good look......you're having actors either saying it or thinking this ........from Christina Ricci:

Christina Ricci is great but she's missing the point entirely.
Nobody has an issue with Andrea Riseboroughâs work or the fact that it was given in a low budget film.
The issue is that at least one high-profile supporter of hers broke Academy rules while campaigning for her AND against others. The latter is not allowed. It really is as black and white as that.
Riseborough shouldnât be punished. Frances Fisher should.

None of the other names you mention broke the rules⊠Fisher is like a Karen Facebook Grandma. The others had people for write in their name. Dont get me wrong I dont justify Fisher Stupidity. But she is critized more for being an almost a nobody, than for her silly campaign. Big fishes never get caught in Hollywood.

My suspicion is that all this controversy and research surrounding Andrea Riseborough's surprise nomination in To Leslie wouldn't be happening if Viola Davis or Danielle Deadwyler (or both) had been nominated.
All this controversy is ridiculous.

All this controversy is ridiculous. Absolutely. There was an article excerpt I saw from Puck News claiming that VIOLA DAVIS doesnât have privilege and access to elite âwhiteâ Hollywood network that Riseborough does. People have unsurprisingly turned this into a race war and claiming that one of the most respected actors and an Oscar winner herself isnât privileged

Ricci is wrong for saying Riseborough had nothing to do with the campaign

These people are gaslighting to deflect from the main issue that one of her "grassroots" campaigners broke the rules while campaigning for her...
Edit: I know I've spoken at length about this issue, so I'll keep it brief and won't bring it up again - I don't think the nomination should be rescinded or that Riseborough should receive any kind of punitive action. But an investigation into the possibility of rule-breaking is more than appropriate here - this has nothing to do with who was snubbed, it has to do with the rules that Academy members are bound by.
Now, as best I can tell, the names who probably truly made the difference for her - Paltrow, Winslet, Adams, Aniston, Fonda, etc. were simply championing her performance and trying to have it be more widely-seen. There is no issue with this. Please see above for what the actual issue is.

You can't mention "the competition" by name while championing the work of another person. Frances Fisher did this more than once while posting on social media about Riseborough's performance. I rather suspect this issue is why campaigning is left to PR firms who are familiar with the rules...

This only seems to apply to people directly associated with the movie, per the Academy's regulations: The Instagram post quoting Roeper's review looks like the bigger issue.

Unless they can prove Riseborough's campaign directed Fisher to call Blanchett, Yeoh, Deadwyler, and Davis locks.

Jfc this person sounds absolutely insufferable and borderline hysterical. If Viola Davis was accused of the same thing, absolutely nothing will happen to her. This nomination wouldnât be half as controversial if Davis and Deadwyler were nominated. Letâs be fucking real about that.
Interesting I now find myself defending Riseboroughâs campaign even though I do not support her nomination (her performance was a total dud for me sorry)
The other anonymous members made great points about how studios and contenders have done far worse and continue to do so

Still upset that this somehow didn't work... It did work. It just took 13 years to materialize, but they both walked away that year with Oscars. The cow got snubbed, though.

I firmly believe that the backlash/attention brought to Riseborough firmly places her third ATM.
