Considering some people claim it to be the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world (on a surface, most players barely play on), surprising their isn't a dedicated thread to the Premier Grass Court tennis tournament (though there are a few threads that are specfic to a particular year for Wimbledon).
Anyway, as usual the Grass Field looks dire (for both the ATP and WTA) because hardly anyone knows how to play on it , allowing Djokovic to dominate this tournament in recent years due to lack of capable grass court competition in their prime. But on the men's side, there may be an interesting development. Andy Murray, who has been struggling for years to return to top form after hip surgery, just got his first win over a Top 5 Opponent since 2016 in Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter finals of the Stuggart Open (a Grass tournament).
Today Murray has just beaten Nick Kyrigos in the semi-finals. Kyrigos is an erratic, but immensely talented player whose game is particularly well suited to Grass because of his serve. So these back to back wins by Murray are impressive. Murray was once arguably the best Grass Court player in the world for a few seasons, and he may be coming back to the type of form to make him a threat at Wimbledon again. Or at least an extremely dangerous floater no top seed will want to draw . His body may not be able to handle the rigours of 5 sets over 2 weeks to win Wimbledon, but he could cause some havoc the way he's playing now.
Murray will face last year's Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berretini in the final of Stuggart.

Murray lost to Berretini in Stuttgart. And picked up an injury.
Like I said, I don't think his body has what it takes to win Wimbledon again, but I think if he plays again, he’s absolutely capable of taking out a top seed early or around the 4th round or quarters, before being eliminated.

Return of the GOAT - well unless you're a Steffi Graf fan and want to argue it London (CNN)Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will make her much-anticipated return to the grass courts of SW19 when the tournament kicks off later this month, after being handed a wild card entry to arguably the most famous tennis tournament in the world.

Too early to hit the panic alarm, but we may need to start reassessing Carlos Alcaraz's ceiling, because the 5 set format looks a serious struggle for him at the moment. Had a 5 set war with Jan Lennard Struff, which he easily could/should have lost. And this is just in the first round. If he keeps having these early round wars in slams against opponents he's expected to dispatch easily based on ranking, he could end up yet another talented prospect that constantly flatters to deceive at slam level, like Alexander Zverev

Wonder how many more there will be, and if the only unvaxxed dude of note in the whole draw will end up with the title There's a pretty decent chance Djokovic may have Covid. People were speculating that he looked a bit ill yesterday after his first round match, uncharacteristically struggling and losing a set against Soon Woon-Kwon. He was also practicing with Cillic recently. From previous behavior though, Djokovic is the type of person who would probably avoid taking a test even if he suspects he may have Covid, try to play through it even if he's feeling rough, and put everyone around him in danger in the process. Nadal may also have contracted it, as he was practicing with Berrettini recently. But if he's feeling sick, he'll probably take the test and withdraw if he tests positive. We may have a situation where someone random like Felix Augur-Alissiame or Tim Van Rithjoven wins Wimbledon this year if the top seeds have to withdraw or are too ill to compete.

I wonder why they don't test all players every other day. Relaxed Covid rules in the UK, since the British Government wants to pretend the pandemic is over. Regular testing is no longer mandatory. Berrettini had to test himself, just because he was feeling ill.

Swiatek wins her 36th in a row in straight sets ...... Ash Barty is on some golf course or something - working on Vegemite meals? Serena Williams plays later today ..... Baldnal cruising along but he dropped the 3rd set, so he'll need 4 or God forbid 5...... Francisco Cerúndolo has played pretty well.....this match is going on now.....

I know these are the current rules, but I wonder why they don't test all players now as a bunch of cases among vaccinated ones are turning up.

Players are allowed to play with covid, Berrettini and Cilic made their own decisions. They're not the only ones who don't care either: twitter.com/i/web/status/1541821766833737729

Serena loses a very entertaining 3 setter to Harmony Tan in the tie-break.......SW got lots of crowd love today though..........her serve was mostly MIA Side note: Ben Rothenberg has got to be the most tiresome, smug pretend to know it all tennis "expert" out there - a regular cherry picker of facts - or worse - when he fellates Nadal - and today he was flat out making stuff up out of nowhere for Serena which she doesn't need unless you're arguing Graf, ok? Which no one was doing today Ben btw

pacinoyes hot take: You know when Satan saw Zverev hobbled and in a wheelchair at the 2022 French Open? Well that was a horrifying glimpse into his own future - because when he's 50 RogaineNadal will walk with a cane and the world isn't made of clay is it? Djokovic cruising along - looking impressive today - wins in straight sets..........with a full haircut you could set your watch by.......... and his posture - on 2 strong good legs btw - was quite impeccable. 17 straight wins on Grass for Djoko..... Caspar Ruud the #3 seed loses because he never should have been that high anyway - to Ugo Humbert in 4 sets

Nadal playing atm - the sun off his massive bald spot is making me f'n dizzy tbh - he'll need 4 sets or maybe 5 - he just dropped the 3rd set. So far his Wimbledon has been - to quote Courtney Barnett "Pedestrian At Best" .......but he's doing his job to get through....... Swiatek lost a set today (!) but wins her 37th in a row Paula Badosa won in straight sets and as long as that happens you get a picture because .......I mean come on just look at that girl .....whew.......you're welcome.......

Alcaraz was phenomenal today. Oscar Otte was having a very good grass season, hypothetically matched up with the kid very well given what we've seen, and it did not fucking matter. What a performance.
The funniest thing here, to me, is that after 20 years of having non-stop shit talked about them the United States could have 6 of the last 16 guys standing (could have been 8 of 16, but Isner and Johson let the side down).

I know anyone can have a hiccup, but her opponents the next two rounds are a massive step up, so I guess we'll soon she what she's really made of on this surface. Djokovic's next match (on paper ) is tasty. One guy on a Wimbledon winning streak against another dude on a grass court winning streak in 2022. Very unstoppable force meets immovable object.

Taylor Fritz looking damn good. If Nadal actually manages to go through Sonego, Botic, and Fritz, that'll be something.
Anisimova also super impressive. So happy to see her getting her shit back together this year.
Brandon Nakashima also looking like an absolute badass.
