People throwing around Ron Howard for the 'great American director'. I thought about Howard, and it makes sense. He is a massive threat this year.

"I don't have... a FILM... at the Cannes Film Festival this year."
That's right -- man's got two films.

Wait is the great American director thing just coming from this guy's tweet? He later confirmed he meant Lynch.

Nah it's coming from Ruimy, who just mentioned on AW that he was talking about Ira Sachs.

Bit of an underwhelming line up tbh.

I can't even imagine how much hate the guy on Twitter who first hinted towards Lynch must be getting right now.

6th time in Comp for Cronenberg, Koreeda, and the great Jerzy Skolimowski (with a remake of Au Hasard Balthazar, hmmm)...... 7th film for Arnaud Desplechin....... 9th for the Dardennes!

I don’t generally predict winners until we get the jury makeup, but fuck it, I’m bored:
Palme d’Or: The Stars At Noon Grand Prix: Showing Up Jury Prize: Triangle of Sadness Best Director: David Cronenberg, Crimes of the Future Best Actor: Song Kang-ho, Broker Best Actress: Tang Wei, Decision to Leave Best Screenplay: Armageddon Time

Reichardt and Williams - the Scorsese-De Niro of their time .........if Williams triumphs here with Showing Up, all that pacinoyes blah blah blah about her eventual screen / Oscars domination will seem much more likely tbh.......this isn't even her big 2022 gun.....curious how this plays

annonymous ballots, twitter gossiping.... enough, lesson learned.
Just on name alone, a far more exciting lineup than last year's. 4 previous palm winners, that's seems more than usual. Glad for Claire Denis, back in compt after 34 years ! I can only hope that in the additions there's at last one iberoamerican film, if it wasn't for Almodovar, that contingent goes unnoticed.

Croneneberg, Gray, Koreeda, Mungiu, Östlund, Reichardt, more Denis for those that fuck with her, new Park Chan-wook... lots to be excited about with this lineup and Three Thousand Years of Longing out of competition is still better than no Three Thousand Years of Longing

SURPRISE:
Huppert is in one of the main comp movies.
Considered putting it in spoilers bc apparently the producers wanted to keep it a secret until the premiere but ScreenDaily spilled the tea all over everybody..... And it's up on her IMDb anyway.
It's SKOLIMOWSKI's EO, the Bresson remake. She's playing a smaller role, I believe, as "The Countess" - Sophia Loren was rumored for the part before Huppert. And here I was thinking we'd miss the Queen of Cannes this year!
(also increases any likelihood of her having a role in the Skolimowski-written The Palace)

Peter Weir hasn't been around/relevant for a long time, but boy would it be cool for him to show up as jury president.

One of Julia Ducournau, Joachim Trier or Sean Baker is "100% on the jury".
Leaning towards Trier.
