I know. I grew up in a very religious environment. Doesn't mean I like it, especially in this day and age, because so many people don't use it metaphorically and will ascribe responsibility to the devil rather than owning it. And even that’s a show of extreme benefit of the doubt, provided they do show some humility and own up to it. Or brush it off, pretend that sin wasn’t sinful, and try to embarrass and convince the “guilty” party of being the sinners. EDIT: I’m genuinely shocked I haven’t seen any mention of Rock being possessed as a vessel to taunt Smith, and coax the sin out of him You know who is being called the devil? Jada. A lot of people don't like her, blame her and say she has him under mind control.

It hasn't even been a full week since the Oscars happened, and it feels like an eternity has passed.

He also mentioned that him and Perry had a private conversation with Smith during the Oscars that he didn't want to get into or talk about publicly. Maybe he gave a quick stern lecture to Will about the action he took with Chris, who knows, that was a conversation between those three gentleman. But if you expected Denzel to go out in public platform like T.D. Jakes Faith and Hollywood Summit event to chastise Will Smith and "throw him under the bus" he wasn't going to do that. Everybody had had their say and opinion on the matter and what Will Smith needs to do. Denzel is metaphorically saying Will had his lowest moment ("when the devil came for him") as a human being on live tv when he slapped Chris Rock which goes against everything about the public personality Will Smith represented since the late 80s. He had a poor lack of judgment and that is what Denzel is talking about using religious metaphor in front of a crowd/function that understands where he's coming from.
Denzel has been Will Smith's friend and mentor for 30+ years and he's probably given Smith a ton of advice over those years about navigating a life/career in Hollywood. I would've been more surprised if Denzel did actually chastise and condemn him in public just to satisfy some people's desires for to rake Smith through the coals.
I'm not saying Denzel Washington has to throw Smith under the bus, nor that I would ever expect him to. I know he and Smith are longtime friends and a public repudiation of that is certainly not in the cards. I'm just saying that I don't like it when people use the devil as a scapegoat for human action because it mitigates accountability and it's easy for someone to "sin" or "offend" again because they can just go back to that old adage of "the devil made me do it." It's a metaphor. How are intelligent people taking Washington literally? It's a metaphor couched in religious terms, but he's essentially talking about the worst aspects within each of us as "the devil". By the way, according to many reports, Denzel's Preacher-esque remarks and approach after the incident were largely responsible for diffusing the situation between Smith and Rock. The guy deserves great credit instead of people take swipes at his being a man of faith.

Now think about how half of them are even dumber than that. Religion is, for so many people, a zero-sum game where the word of God is taken at face value. And there is rarely any room for logic or metaphorical interpretation for the devout. Even if he's using it metaphorically, it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth and no attempts at rationalizing that will change it.

Boy, Denzel has been on that devil talk heavy. He sounds like an old church lady. I make jokes, but people need to make it clear. Jada and Will were separated and both sleeping with other people. It bothers me so much how people keep acting like only Jada slept with someone else when they said they both slept with other people. People keep hating on Jada and actually calling her dragon lady and abusive bitch who emasculates her husband. And poor Will is a cuck. It’s so fucking sexist!

Or even beaten up. Denzel is from New York. I think he knows a grown man can take a slap and doesn't need to be coddled about it a week later. Smith is the one whom everyone is trying to step on his neck, over a hot-headed incident that while regrettable, is pretty fucking minor in the scheme of things. He's had to resign his Academy membership, and people are trying make it a big enough thing to try and finish his career (won't happen, but it won't stop people trying). So Rock is fine. No one is trying to end his career and his tour is actually selling more because of the incident. Smith actually is the one who needs support now.

Alot of black celebrities who aren't stand-up comedians have been pretty callous to Rock. Did Denzel call Rock and speak to him in the 24 hours after that slap? I truly wonder.

According to the reports I read, Denzel was actually showing concern to both Smith and Rock immediately after the incident and was speaking to both of them in the auditorium during the commercial break. He basically diffused the situation. He spent more time calming Smith down, because his emotional state was more heightened and Rock seemed to be fairly relaxed about things by comparison. So yeah, he's spoken to Rock already and more than likely did a follow-up after the ceremony. Denzel was actually a bit of a legend in this situation.

Said it before, the only person trying to end Will Smith's career is Will Smith........Rock was the adult non-criminal, non-cuckold in the room, handled himself with grace and dignity, in an impossible situation........... and probably (I guess) has a loving wife and marriage who doesn't turn him into an emasculated man-child. This story will never end, and it will never not look better for Chris Rock than it does with each passing day........ and the next time Will Smith does something embarrassing (he will)........he'll be reminded of this again and look worse.......again.

I love how you can defend the likes of Roman Polanski all day long for sticking his dick in a child's anus because you like his movies, but you draw the line of unforgivable celebrity behavior at "criminal" Will Smith slapping a guy in defense of his wife. Oh my, the pearl clutching

Both are out of the Academy, both won their Oscars fair and square and can keep 'em. Sounds just right to me tbh Priscilla.

Polanski should be in prison, doing a stretch of several years. His "punishment" and crime is not remotely comparable to Smith on any level. Who gives a shit if Polanski is out of the Academy? That’s not a punishment for what he did. He raped a 13 year girl and basically got away with it. So forgive me if I hear your overwraught handwringing about Smith like he just shot JFK, and find your whole pained act over a frigging slap to be disingenuous (not to mention hypocritical), when I know you can defend convicted child rapists, wife beaters and assorted criminals all day long if you are fans of them

Video now: I think he could actually "play" this guy as an overbearing comic movie character - and I always say he doesn't actually have a big time success in a straight comedy imo (oh you disagee? I don't give af !) - but he wouldn't play on his faith for laughs like that I'm pretty sure. Anyway, he comes off fine here to me - and not too wackadoodle imo - except maybe a little disingenuous when he says "I don't know all the particulars of the situation" - um.......... everybody knows all the particulars of Will Smith's situation.......

I actually didn't mind Schumer as a host and thought her opening monologue was pretty funny... though it kind of seems like the "edited" version of what she had planned and what we ultimately got was probably a lot better than her uncensored self.
