It doesn't work like that. Nobody is ever assured of an Oscar because of a casting announcement and a director. Other performances come into play. Other narratives start to form. Races are fluid. If the mere combo of DDL, Lincoln and Spielberg was enough, that World's Greatest Actor narrative on the cover of one of the worlds most respected periodicals wouldn't have been necessary for their campaign (the exact same stunt was done for Kate Winslet to help assure her win for The Reader, a film I'm not sure anyone remembers). It all but assured the win. Yes, it was a combination of things.. DDL, Spielberg, Lincoln...and the whole "world's greatest actor coronation thing " milked heavily during that particular season. Not sure why it so hard for some to admit the last part factored as well. I'm happy to admit those other factors you mentioned made a difference. Well, I know the win wasn't literally assured after the announcement. But from the get-go it just read as something that would become a juggernaut. Sure the cover you keep talking about helped immensely and was used as a great campaign stroke. But the win wasn't predicated on the 'third time win' narrative. At least it's not the way I remember it at all. I really don't recall the mantra of that season being 'Let's give Danny his third one!' Well, I'd agree it wasn't specifically about saying "give Danny a 3rd" (in quite the same way it blatantly was said for Streep), but when your campaign is loudly shouting " This is the World's Greatest Actor" for the whole season, you are effectively saying just that. You can say something, without actually having to say it, if you know what I mean

Remember last year when there was so much talk about Lindo being undeniable? Point is, nothing is a given this early on. Well in his case it's multiple levels of hilarious wrong-headed thinking.........and we get it every every year.......I mean that sh it ran deep1. He was undeniable (he wasn't at all) 2. He was lead (he wasn't) 3. He was overdue (he's f'n not) 4. Critics awards matter at all (they really don't) Most annoying .gif in MAR history..........tbh I shudder at what we may have coming up in 2021 tbh

From what I remember about DDL once we saw the pre-release photo of him still in character, everyone knew he was going to score a nod. That was pretty much a lock. Then he got good press and on top of that the movie surprised at the box office. I don't think a lot of people saw that part coming.

Most people fell off the idea of Lindo winning within a couple of months of his film premiering. Pretty much the only person who held on to him for far too long was our good ol friend Pup.

I dunno, I remember the casting being announced and everybody going 'Welp, here goes the Oscar'. Other presidential performances (in projects that were way less high profile) may not have won before but I doubt that any AMPAS member would remember that and go 'Oh, guess I'm not voting for DDL either'. The mere combo of Spielberg, Lincoln and DDL was enough. And yeah, Spielberg's movies have never won acting Oscars before that, but from the beginning this was rather clearly the film that was gonna break that mold. Phoenix wouldn't have been a threat because the movie was too alienating for AMPAS members which its lack of support aside from the acting branch clearly shows. Not sure why it so hard for some to admit the last part factored as well. I'm happy to admit those other factors you mentioned made a difference. Obviously other factors come into play, but there have been a few times where someone has been cast in a film, and it just feels inevitable that they’ll win the Oscar because of how baity the role/project seems. DDL as Lincoln was one of those times, and most recently Gary Oldman as Churchill was another. (In hindsight, I probably should have seen it with Eddie Redmayne too, but given his age and not being as well known as he is now, I didn’t give him to much thought until he started winning everything.) Jennifer Hudson as Effie was another win that I saw someone call when she was cast because of her big musical moment that that person felt no one could top, and they were right. Sometimes that doesn’t always work out, but in a few cases it has. With Winslet, I don’t remember anything about Time magazine or anything, it was just the fact that she had amassed a large number of nominations, and it just felt like it might finally be her year since she had two baity projects similar to what it felt like when Leo finally won in that, it just finally felt like the right time and he was in a very baity film. Plus it helped that her competition was pretty nonexistent because they didn’t want to award Streep her third, and Doubt wasn’t very strong except with the acting branch.

Remember last year when there was so much talk about Lindo being undeniable? Point is, nothing is a given this early on. Seriously. This is a peer award and anything can happen. Just because we adore some of those actors it doesn't mean their peers do. I can't speak for the others, but I don't have particularly strong feelings about Smith either way. I'm just analysing the field as I see it, if I was predicting with any bias I would be shouting Cumberbatch from the rooftops.

Also, the academy is made up of thousands of individual voters. It’s not a small board that makes a consensus based on narratives. Majority of voters don’t care about narratives.

I still think certain narratives can be effective, but I don’t think that’s nearly as important as having the role and/or a strong film

Joe Wright is fairly inconsistent as a director. People wondered whether a fat suit and make-up would make Oldman look silly as Churchill. Plenty of other actors had played the role to great acclaim, so there was no novelty factor. It could have been a huge flop, but it happened to work out. This is what I am saying. Everything needs to align just right, even if it feels obvious on paper. Obviously some roles and projects have more potential than others, and nothing wrong with acknowledging that. But so many "slam dunk" Oscar "wins" go nowhere (remember when everyone assumed Liam Neeson had the supporting Actor Oscar for Silence in the bag, because the role was so good in the book and it was Scorsese?)

It was Scorsese's personal passion project he struggled to make for more than 25 years. It was an abstruse European type of arthouse film about ruminations regarding faith and spirituality ignored by voters not because of the actual quality of the film, but because of the dense and challenging subject matter and because it was quite frankly undermarketed and buried by Paramount (it absolutely needed a festival route) to favor more accessible contenders (Fences and Arrival).

I think people forget how great Winslet is in the first half-ish of The Reader, the movie as well for that duration. It's not a risible artifact at all IMO, it just gets dull in the latter stages with Fiennes and the jail scenes. Her transformation into a post-war German was far more startling to me than any of DDL's outside of Bill the Butcher. I think people point to Metacritic or Weinstein too much instead of just recalling what watching a movie/performance was like in a theater with an audience.
