It's very different from The Great Beauty. This one was an emotional rollercoaster for me.

Hmmmmmmm - and you wonder why I hate every Oscar season From Jeff Wells site - Wells:
Earlier this evening I spoke to a friend who’s seen Jane Campion‘s The Power of the Dog (Netflix, 11.17), and he said “it’s longish but I loved it.” On the other hand some are tracking mixed reactions out of Venice. The first Telluride screening is on Saturday at 7 pm. I don’t mean to mix animal metaphors, but let’s hold our horses for three days. Okay, until the Venice reviews break. Guy Lodge Left a rich and thoughtful and beautiful film tonight and the first comment I overheard as I exited: “Well, that’s going nowhere this season.” I know this is the game, and sometimes I’ve played it, but sometimes it really is bleak.

I think lately, the Academy is much more responsive to films of this ilk, so I don't buy that it's "going nowhere." It may not be the big winner, but I think it's got high equity for nominations and maybe a few wins.

Some reviews seem to be saying Cumberbatch is miscast as well (though others are claiming it's his best performance). Not sure he is the slam dunk Best Actor frontrunner some thought he might be, but he could possibly be be nominated if the film is strong overall with the Academy

How will these people rank the movie? It has to be I love it enough to rank it in first position. As for the performances, well we shall see. I think it is a good looking movie but will be a tough sell for a win.

I very much disagree on Cumberbatch being miscast.

As I thought. I don't understand why Campion even cast him.
Better and rawer actors such as Michael Fassbender or Tom Hardy would have absolutely owned this role.

He's definitely getting nominated.

Kodi Smit Mcphee and Kirsten Dunst are getting better notices than Cumberbatch.
He may get nominated. He probably will. People were hyping his performance up to be the next Daniel Plainview before reviews even dropped, so there is a preconceived buy-in to him that may get him over the line. People who see themselves as in the know don't like being wrong. But he is not getting undeniable DDL as Plainview level notices. He's already showing serious signs of weakness/vulnerability. And it's not like he is some massive Academy favorite to begin with. His saving grace may be critics really going to bat for the film overall. He could also still win the Volpi Cup for Best Actor (you don't need undeniable reviews for that to happen), which would obviously help his cause a lot.

Stewart is very good. She's not my MVP (that's Timothy Spall) but she's good.
Villeneuve is a threat, but he wouldn't be my choice.

Colman is (of course) getting some absolute raves for The Lost Daughter. I worry she'll get lost in the shuffle of more 'exciting' players like Stewart, but here's hoping she continues to get rewarded for the consistently outstanding work she's doing.
Getting more and more excited for Power of the Dog and Spencer. My ambivalence towards Dune has not changed.

Both Variety and THR weren't crazy about Dune.

Stewart is very good. She's not my MVP (that's Timothy Spall) but she's good. oh my goodness, I didn't even know Spall was in this or who he's playing. Does he have a lot of screentime? Could he be an outside shot for a nomination? Also, can you compare Stewart and Corrin? That's really all I want to know.

The reviews seem mixed-positive to very good, with the script being the main gripe. Thoughts?
