With today's rumors that Denis Villeneuve will be on the Lido for Dune and Pablo Sorrentino for Hand of God, I'd figured I'd get the Venice Film Festival thread underway.
Other rumored titles: Gabriele Mainetti's Freaks Out, Bruno Dumont's On a Half Clear Morning and Xavier Giannoli's Lost Illusions.

I think these movies are also almost locked for a competition slot: -Nightmare Alley (Guillermo Del Toro) -Spencer (Pablo Larrain) -Monica (Andrea Pallaoro) -Fire (Claire Denis) -The Box (Lorenzo Vigas) -Caravaggio’s Dream (Michele Placido) -The Story of My Wife (Ildikó Enyedi)

Caravaggio's Dream was rumored for Cannes too.

Caravaggio's Dream was rumored for Cannes too. To be fair, The Wages of Fear won the top prize at both Berlin and Cannes, so there is precedent.

Caravaggio's Dream was rumored for Cannes too. I don’t expect the movie to make the official competition given the big names that already rumoured. Meanwhile in Venice could take a slot in the official competition as part of the “Italian quota” with Sorrentino, Mainetti and Pallaoro. For Cannes i would say both Moretti (Our Way) and Frammartino (The Hole) are locked but these are only my assumptions.

They also say the new Sorrentino will premiere at Venice.

Sounds like they won't make it in time.

World of Reel chimes in ...........has no one read Power of the Dog because it's a great book with an all-timer role for Cumberbatch imo.........if they shoot the book I mean : www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/6/k2te5hizwg24e4xm0y4plxtyw8gmpm You can add Jane Campion’s new film, “The Power of the Dog,” to what I keep hearing will be an absolutely astonishing 2021 Venice Film Festival. (Variety)
If you remember, the film was aiming to premiere at Cannes, but the Netflix issue at the heart of that festival hasn’t been solved. A real shame since Campion remains the only female director to ever win the Palme d’Or with 1993’s “The Piano.”
The synopsis for “The Power of the Dog” is said to follow “two brothers in 1920s Montana as they come to blows over the fact that one of them marries a woman secretly. The upset brother then wages war against the new addition to the family.”
And so, with Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” also Venice-bound, it all begs us to ask the question; will Venice outshine Cannes this year? This is having some in the industry buzzing, but don’t be fooled, Cannes is still the Mecca of cinema. If you’re looking for Oscar-buzz then, yeah, maybe Venice wins, but, in terms of pure world cinema quality, Cannes always gets the top spot.
With that being said, I am continuing on with my Venice predictions, updated below, and it is looking like it will be a mighty fine edition filled with big names. Just look at some of the titles destined for the Lido this year:
"Dune" - Denis Villenueve "Soggy Bottom" - Paul Thomas Anderson "Blonde" - Andrew Dominik "The Power of the Dog" - Jane Campion "The Tragedy of Macbeth" - Joel Coen "Benediction" - Terrence Davies "The Card Counter" - Paul Schrader "The Hand of God" - Paolo Sorrentino "Spencer" - Pablo Larrain "Fire" - Claire Denis "Decision to Leave" - Park Chan-wook "The Eternal Daughter" - Joanna Hogg "Driftwood" - Michel Franco "Il buco" - Michelangelo Frammartino "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" - Ana Lily Amirpour "House of Gucci" - Ridley Scott

I doubt all those English-language movies will be there, and we have learned that House of Gucci won't be completed in time. I think Macbeth is ready and might go, not sure about PTA, though he loves premiering his movies at big festivals. I don't like Michel Franco and I hope he doesn't come again The others seem plausible (crossing fingers for Claire and Park).

Yeah, that would be an absolute murderer's row of filmmakers (as I suppose Ridley is still technically a possibility, just for his other film).

Barbera would have probably preferred House of Gucci for a number of reasons, let's see if he reserves a slot for The Last Duel, in or out of competition.
I'm surprised that WoR doesn't mention Nightmare Alley, it seems like a no-brainer for Searchlight to premiere it in Venice given their recent history with Guillermo there.
Another few names that could (and in some cases, should) appear this year: Stephan Brizé, Xavier Giannoli, Gabriele Mainetti, Michele Placido, Lorenzo Vigas, Amat Escalante, Ulrich Seidl, Lucille Hadzialilovic, Alain Guiradie, Paula Ortiz.

I know right? It would easily be one of my most anticipated of the festival. I read that he was filming at the end of last year so it's an option, and probably in if it's completed.

This year's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement goes to Jamie Lee Curtis.
Halloween Kills will also be premiering here out of competition.

This year's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement goes to Jamie Lee Curtis. What a lovely, unexpected choice . A captivating film actress who never really got as much in the way of prestigious film accolades as many of her peers, likely owing to her unpretentious taste in material (horror, comedy, action etc) over conventional awardbaiting (she may be the female equivalent to Kurt Russell in that regard). Even then, she managed to stand out and earn major award notice in genres that often struggle with major awards recognition, with her work in Trading Places and A Fish Called Wanda.Great for such a highbrow festival to acknowledge her contributions to cinema.

I really like the Kurt Russell comparison, and now I want Tarantino to direct a Death Proof-esque role for Curtis.

Opening film announces tomorrow, and we’ll know the rest of the lineup this week.
Also right under this tweet Alberto Barbera responded that more than a third of these predictions wouldn’t be ready.

Hmmmmm...........and yet the American films on this list are pretty much known to be finished and have been seen by some at least.........this could be a VERY US-centric festival .............The Northman obviously is the one that would be out here since I assume it's still being cut or re-cut and it's release date has no urgency to play Venice .........

It's not clear how many US films are in the running to premiere here, I guess we'll have a better idea after Toronto announces their special showings.
Not confident at all in PTA and Coen, Nightmare Alley has a very good chance. I think Barbera was counting on House of Gucci but a miracle is needed for that one.
Claire Denis is a big question mark, while I've heard that De La Iglesia is a big resounding yes.
