Only 8 BP nominees this year. It's pretty telling that the majority of the Academy members didn't give an actual fuck about this awards season. Explain.

Unlike recent years, which had 9 or 10 nominees, this year was only 8. Less votes to create a consensus around 9 or 10 films.

Also I'm pretty sure they have never nominated 10 films.
Since 2011: 2011: 9 2012: 9 2013: 9 2014: 8 2015: 8 2016: 9 2017: 9 2018: 8 2019: 9

Lame that the shock acting nod was a crappy lead performance getting into supporting. Really hope the (justified) confusion/frustration over Stanfield's placement doesn't overshadow views on the performance itself. He was fantastic! Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield - I'll take it, no matter where he is.

Not really a fan of LaKeith's performance so not pleased with the surprise nom of the year. Like/love almost all others that I've seen esp. The White Tiger's, PYW and fuckin WOLFWALKERS!!! P.S: I love Priyanka!

Fairly satisfied with the nominations overall despite the insanity of snubbing Göransson.

I haven't even watched 5 movies from 2020/early '21 but even I can tell you that the Borat sequel was not one of the 5 best adapted screenplays of the year and I liked that movie lol

Btw, I'm slightly annoyed that once again the VFX branch doesn't want to recognize computer animated films...Soul thoroughly deserved a nomination for the incredible realism of its textures and for the stupendous performances the animators were able to create through their work. The way Joe's expressions are animated makes his 'acting' one of the best of the year, coupled with Jamie Foxx's great voiceover work. It's just incredible and so expressive. I guess they think that the Best Animated Film nod is enough but I think recognizing specific achievements by the animation VFX team is more for their branch. And they don't go for it. A bit of a shame!
Even this year we've already got "Raya" and that one has amazing effects too with some shots looking almost live action.

Didn't know about the Oscar Isaac-starring short film, I wanna seee it. Húsavík !! I liked Minari but Yeun was least-best of cast. Others more deserving - Lindo or Mads' first nod would've been cool, or countless other guys. Same goes for Lakeith, an overplayed perf. With so much love for The Father and Sound of Metal, incl Best Pic noms, I still don't think Chadwick is a sealed deal. Personally would pick/predict Riz - I haven't seen Hopkins yet.

Overall, I think these are pretty much in line with what everyone was expecting. Not many surprises, and a lot of people here got what they wanted Super happy for Mulligan She's definitely one of my favorite working actresses, and perhaps the best of her generation (hard to believe this is only her 2nd nomination). I still have a lot of catching up to do, but these nominees do look interesting.

I just realized Golden Globe winner Rosamund Pike didn't made the Academy cut.

8-9 has been common in recent years so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Isn't it obvious? Years with nine nominees, voters are spoiled for choices and it's a bang-up year for cinema. Years with eight, it's a fuckin' wasteland.

I have so much to catch up on. I didn’t even know what the big buzz titles, or who’s even favored to win.

I just realized Golden Globe winner Rosamund Pike didn't made the Academy cut. She was never going to happen. The consensus 5 was just way too strong, and even if someone did sneak in, it honestly may have been Han.

People will still talk about and revisit Da 5 Bloods and Lindo's performance over the years, which is not something i can say about half of the BP nominees up there.
