Can't believe I got 5/5 on Director! Also got 5/5 on Actress and Cinematography. Almost did in PD and CD, but switched at the last minute. Overall, did pretty good, 3-4/5 in most categories. I was an epic fail at International Film tho lmao
So happy for PYW getting Director and Editing. I was confident in Fennell, but not so much on Editing, even though I predicted it. Also happy that Minari got 6 nods, and BD among them!
I think this season, even if overlong, was so refreshing. Who knew a black comedy about rape revenge from a debut female director, and a small family drama on Asian Americans, both with Sundance debuts, would make it to BP/BD? And what about a small movie from TIFF 2019 about a drummer going deaf that was shelved for over a year, did you think it'd get Editing and two acting noms? At june, I would've laughed at the idea. Then Mulligan and Yeun started to feel like pipe dreams, but were in the conversation. And now, here we are.

Happy for Riz, Raci, Odom, Seyfried, Bakalova, and Glenn Close. And also underrated legend Ramin Bahrani in adapted screenplay (though I haven't seen his film yet). Lame that the shock acting nod was a crappy lead performance getting into supporting.

It's been a hell of a good run, Lindo GIF. I hope we see you again in the near future. Couldn't find any Terence Blanchard dancing gif though. Approriate music for the occasion.

Looking at the nomination totals, it’s nice that it wasn’t like last year where 4 films were in the double digits for nominations. I love it when things are more spread out, and if it means a longer season so we don’t get the same as last year I’m fine with that.

Stanfield was even campaigned as Lead. I wonder how Academy voters concluded he was supporting. ^Also happened with Albert Brooks for Broadcast News in 1987.

Very well-deserved, especially since he had never been nominated prior. To go from that to two Oscar nominations in a row, it shows that the music branch of the academy really respects him now.

Pinocchio in costume design was a shock. Anyone see this movie yet? It came out in Italy in 2019 so I count it as a 2019 film. I watched it a couple of days ago, enjoyed it quite a bit. Didn't think it was gonna get in costumes (although it got a Guild nod) but was almost predicting it for Production Design...missed the right category. It should EASILY win makeup in a just world, it's just astonishing and varied...but I guess greasy Viola is gonna rob it.

Let me get this right, last year movies like Joker and 1917 got rewarded with nominations for those awful, dull screenplays, but thus year Mank missed Screenplay??? These Academy people keep revealing themselves as a joke. It's almost like those movies faced different competition.

A lot of movies tied at 6 nods, so even the debate who was #6 for BD is interesting. Shaka King, Zeller and Marden are all very realistic, as those three movies overperformed and got major categories.

It only took a pandemic that made major studios hold off their golden-status contenders for the next year! But honestly, I feel like this was the year of the passion picks, and it should be the start of a trend. So boring to see the same names nominated every year and sweeping all season.

GodDAMMIT, why oh WHY did I believe the hype about a deep fake documentary being nominated for VFX when I've been so positive about Love and Monsters chances for such a long time! Should've never betrayed my gut. Anyway, very happy for the work itself - it's awesome. Quite sad that Ludwig Goransson got Justin Hurwitz'd but happy that Tenet at least got something beyond VFX. Ma Rainey in Production Design and Chicago 7 in Cinematography are the worst tech nods for a LONG time. Sean Bobbitt though!!! Very happy that the Academy didn't fuck up on a big Song contender for once and actually nominated 'Husavik'. Eurovision goes to the Oscars Kind of lame that Pedro Almodovar couldn't get a goddamn Live Action Short nomination...ultra lame. Very glad for LaKeith even though it's just a hilarious case of category fraud - he never impressed me before this movie but he sure deserved this nomination. Certainly weird that Mank got 10 nominations and yet along with the Editing they also snubbed its screenplay. Doesn't make much sense tbh. Glad that AMPAS did the right thing and instead of choosing between Judas and Sound of Metal just dropped Ma Rainey and Miami. They're fine films but the two that got in are certainly more remarkable. Disappointed about Dear Comrades! not getting in International Film Isn't it strange that this is the first ever nomination for Dariusz Wolski?

No real surprise here...
Happy for Oldman and Seyfried, really wanted Lindo to be in. I know it was highly unlikely but still...

Tom Hanks is kind of good to have in your movie if you want some sort of a Sound nod. Greyhound and NOTW this year, Sully, Bridge of Spies, Captain Phillips, Toy Story 3 this decade.
And Glenn Close becomes our first Oscar + Razzie nominee since Amy Irving, right?

It's just a different supporting actress than what people expected.

Sound of Metal gets in for screenplay, dope. Happiest for Cianfrance. Should’ve got more recognition for his Blue Valentine and Place Beyond the Pines screenplays.

Only 8 BP nominees this year.
It's pretty telling that the majority of the Academy members didn't give an actual fuck about this awards season.
