Hmmm, I wonder if we're going to see any sort of random winner results in reaction to this. Might have a bigger effect on Oscar voters not neccesarily perceiving the Golden Globes BP nominees line-up as the "legitimate" BP frontrunners. I don't necessarily see it that way, but I do think you're going to see a lot of the awards bodies take notice on how they're going to be perceived in the short-term. That's why I don't think Trial is winning SAG Ensemble because imagine the optics of picking the one predominantly white lineup among four minority-driven casts. And BAFTA got called out by Phoenix last year and I imagine part of the reason they went to six nominees per category was to ensure some diversity.

So they're allergic to black people in general. If you're located in LA and can't find one single black person to hire then you are not trying to find one.
I hope Regina doesn't participate this year as a protest.

I just try to predict the most boring choices because that's usually what the award bodies tend to go with. For Davis, there's also the "win in lead" push and of course the Golden Globes being racist as fuck, that I think could certainly play in her favor so they can redeem themselves.

That's definitely a possibility, but I don't think this is going to be at Mulligan's expense. I actually think it's what guarantees that Supporting Actor goes to someone like Kaluuya and not, say, Sacha Baron Cohen, and really gets his momentum going. Boseman's also pretty well locked in, and Zhao as well, so the HFPA can point to those winners and tout them as proof positive that no, they're not racist. But yeah, they could also definitely throw a win to Davis, whom they clearly love, but I'm not going so far as to predict her for it over Mulligan.

I mean, this is not a groundbreaking discovery, we knew this group sells itself easily, but I hope this doesn't destroy the organization entirely. I don't mind the idea of a legimitate group of foreign critics/journalists weighing in on the Oscar race, just not these frauds.

This isn't even an open secret, neither was Harvey Weinstein. People who don't work in the industry or even live in L.A. know that the Golden Globes are a total sham and that Weinstein is a disgusting man. All it takes is basic research and common sense. Something that can be done at home without a journalism degree.

Have they nominated any Black actors at all this year? They may give them the most acting wins this year just to salvage some damage... (if they are even clever enough to do that... somehow they all just seem dumb to me...) Boseman and Kaluuya were already most likely to win, but I suppose by your logic this could give Viola Davis a little boost? Would be cool to see 3/4 winners be POC at any ceremony this year (or 4/4 if Youn pulls off a win)

Well, there seems to be a concerted campaign in Hollywood to take the Globes to account, at least for the lack of black members.

I’m sorry I thought time’s up was supposed to be about sexual assault? I see it has followed the same evolution as all the other lefty slogans
Also, no one should be surprised by any of the Emily in Paris stuff. We all know “politics” plays a big part on the awards circuit so let’s not act surprised when these ppl act like politicians

Damn...wonder how many other Hollywood names are going to be posting this? Hugely embarrassing for the Globes and really undermines their ceremony this year (and perphaps their influence on shaping this year's Oscars as well)

Does anyone know the demo breakdown for voting members? Is it just all white? They claim members from South American publications, the China Times and "pan-Arabic magazine Kul Al Osra"...so probably not?
I mean what would be more damning is if there were evidence of mid-southern African descended (or based) journalists whose applications were turned down.

How much hypocrisy. Does Ava DuVernay forget that she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director when even the Image Awards ignored her. Or Regina King forgets that the Golden Globes awarded her when the Sag Award did not nominate her. I do not remember that the other opinions were angry when they were nominated or awarded. They do all this for fashion or because it is the topic of the moment.

Does anyone know the demo breakdown for voting members? Is it just all white? Looking at members past and present, the HFPA seems probably more diverse and certainly more global than the AMPAS. A few examples: Ali Sar (Turkey, current president), Meher Tatna (India, former president), Aida Takla (Egypt, former president), Munawar Hosain (Bangladesh), Lisa Lu (China), H. J. Park (Korea), Lynn Tso (Taiwan), Ana Maria Bahiana (Brazil), Jorge Camara (Mexico, former president), Janet Nepales (Philippines)...

Laura Dern made one of those #timesup posts too. Girl, you're fucking presenting tomorrow. Oooh... spicy The show itself might be something of a trainwreck, as if someone like Dern holds to form, a lot of stars will be shitting on the Globes while presenting or winning awards. See, Hollywood stars know how to have their cake and eat it! There is safety in numbers. As long as everyone is dissing the Globes right now, they can all expect to be invited back if/when they have decided to clean up their act.

A lot of these countries and cultures are anti-black in some aspects of their society (especially many Latin and Asian cultures), so it still doesn't solve racism. Anti-black racism has been exported worldwide, and isn't just the provenance of white or European cultures.

A lot of these countries and cultures are anti-black in some aspects of their society (especially many Latin and Asian cultures), so it still doesn't solve racism. Anti-black racism has been exported worldwide, and isn't just the provenance of white or European cultures. In other words, everybody is racist except black people. And diversity doesn't matter unless they're black. When it comes to the HFPA not having black members, the why matters more than the what. According to The Wrap, black applicants are rare because few of them satisfy the HFPA's bylaws that you have to have resided in California for two years, and that you have to have been a member of the Motion Picture Association for the previous year. According to Theo Kingma, a former HFPA president, "We have this rule that you have to be a member of the MPA for a year, which is fair, because it’s an overseeing body. We also have the rule that you have to live in Southern California for two years. Sadly enough, if you go through the international directory, there is only one person from South Africa that is listed. There is nobody (black) because they can’t afford to come and live here. I’ve been a member for 21 years, and I can promise you I’ve never ever heard anything racial." Now, they could change the bylaws to make membership more accessible, but it's common knowledge that the HFPA loves feeling special and there is no quicker way of becoming less special than to dilute your membership and, thereby, your influence. As 1 member out of 87, you have great influence. As 1 member out of 200, you have less than half the influence. To change any bylaws, two-thirds of the membership has to agree, and it makes sense why that is not going to happen. It'd be like expecting a senator from Wyoming to support having 10 senators from California. That's probably why the total membership of the HFPA has held steady at around 90 members for many years now. I'm not saying that's a good thing, I am saying mere self-preservation and even corruption are not evidence of racism. The last black applicant to the HFPA, to my knowledge, was apparently Samantha Ofole-Prince. According to Judy Solomon, another former HFPA president, Ofole-Prince was rejected because she did not provide the four clippings required by the group's bylaws to be admitted. In her own words, ""Why I voted against [Ofole-Prince] is because she didn’t follow the bylaws. I felt that if I really wanted to join the association, I’d have clippings ready." None of this is to support the HFPA, whose corruption is beyond dispute at this point. And they may very well be racist, though no such evidence has actually been produced. But accusations of "racism" have become so cavalier these days that they've lost all meaning. Just calling someone else racist because the media or self-serving celebrities tell you to and then patting yourself on the back isn't good enough. Identifying real racism should be the first and most important step to progress toward a post-racial world.
