How are people questioning Vertigo when the movie is about passion?

See, I thought of putting Vertigo on my ballot, but then I'd have to put several other creepy stalker movies in there like The Night Porter and Madoka Magica: Rebellion and, I dunno, Misery. Of course, TNP did make my list, but it's a two-sided creepy stalker story, so that's okay. You're kidding, but is she even in love with the guy in Misery? I just remember her being obsessed with his novels and breaking his legs so he'd be forced to stay there and write fanfics for her. Not really the same thing.

“Brief Encounter” is way higher than I expected but very glad it’s there!

Brief Encounter is not that good to deserve that high.
I used to think it's the bees knees too, but rewatch really proved that Lean should've just stuck to adventure epics his whole life. He can do romance well, no doubt (Dr. Zhivago) - but this movie feels so dated now.

How are people questioning Vertigo when the movie is about passion? Right, that's the issue. It's not like he's some dude jerking off watching her shower, there's actual pathos there.

Was An Affair to Remember too girly? LMAO!! Had it in my top ten but I don't think our forum goes for straight classic melodramas like that unfortunately.

How are people questioning Vertigo when the movie is about passion? *Puts on professor glasses* Ah, but is "passion" romance? That's my issue with the whole genre: passion is inherently selfish and taking, whereas love should be about giving and sharing and helping each other to stand. The "passionate" side of romance has always felt... rapey, to me. Passionate "love" is but the fulfillment of desire, but can a murder not be a work of great passion? John Wick is just as passionate as Vertigo, in that it is all consuming and ferocious. They can both be great movies, but I can't jibe with finding anything that I'd want to swoon over in either. Same issue with Brokeback Mountain, or Before Sunrise, or fill in the blank. I just find the notion of selfish "love" to be... rather unsettling.

Love The Apartment in the top five. I had Casablanca at like 15 or something but it's no surprise that it will be no. 1.

So “Casablanca” wins. I think it’s terrific but I’m not really a fan.

anyone want to take a guess at the point total for #1? 350-400? It's pretty much the ultimate romance film.

The ApartmentBilly Wilder, 1960 281 points 18 ballots (#1 on 1 ballot) Bud getting punched out by Fran's brother is one of the most romantic things to happen on this list. That's what I like to see: A guy willing to lay himself on the line to protect his true love's honor.

I'm holding out hope for The Silence of the Lambs to make a surprise showing here. Surely I can't be the only person to vote for it.
Edit: I guess I was...
