How are people questioning Vertigo when the movie is about passion? *Puts on professor glasses* Ah, but is "passion" romance? That's my issue with the whole genre: passion is inherently selfish and taking, whereas love should be about giving and sharing and helping each other to stand. The "passionate" side of romance has always felt... rapey, to me. Passionate "love" is but the fulfillment of desire, but can a murder not be a work of great passion? John Wick is just as passionate as Vertigo, in that it is all consuming and ferocious. They can both be great movies, but I can't jibe with finding anything that I'd want to swoon over in either. Same issue with Brokeback Mountain, or Before Sunrise, or fill in the blank. I just find the notion of selfish "love" to be... rather unsettling. Speaking for myself I want someone to actually want me and be somewhat selfish about it. Nobody likes somebody who's like "whatever you want to do" all the time. Obviously Ferguson takes it way too far in Vertigo but that does not make it not a romantic relationship. To partially reiterate what I said before, calling something a "romance film" is not an endorsement of the relationship in the movie, it's just a descriptive term.

I completely forgot Casablanca on my list. But as the quote from it goes - "Never underestimate American blundering."

I'm holding out hope for The Silence of the Lambs to make a surprise showing here. Surely I can't be the only person to vote for it. Edit: I guess I was... Touch of finger behind the bars > the ending of Casablanca.

I'm sad Splendor In The Grass , The Bridges Of Madison County , Dangerous Liaisons and The Notebook didn't make the list.
I'm glad Blue Is The Warmest Color was left out , though.
A nice Top 50 overall.

We had our differences (categorizing Vertigo or The New World even) but I had a big-ass smile on my face all the way through. What a ride people...and nice work Sharbs I'm gonna take the campaigning part more seriously though, from now on.

Well, I think that desire is of course a part of romance, and conflict is another central part (C.S. Lewis writes some great sections in A Grief Observed about how his wife never reacted the way he imagined she would to anything he did - and after her passing, he found himself grieving for that person that was far different than the woman he had in his head). But I do believe that love is about helping each other get through things, and love should empower us to be more selfless and giving.

Thanks guys for stickin' with it given stupid internet issues, I know it's getting lateish across the pond, glad nothing reared its ugly head during the middle of it. Loved the comments. Most selfish list I could make. It's all about the glorious recs.. 392 movies were voted for

Well, I can say for certain now that I'm in the boat of Hugh Grant in About a Boy, when told:
"You'll die childless and alone!" "Well, fingers crossed."
