65% on RT now with 40 reviews. That's a steep drop from 78% like 12 hours ago .
The Last Duel by contrast ended with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. And it did deserve that score, imho. It's release date and complete box office failure was the main thing that stopped it being a serious Best Picture. and Oscar contender across the board. On it's current trajectory, Napoleon doesn't look like it's headed for Best Picture contention, though it's not impossible if AMPAS falls for the spectacle and pageantry. Maybe some techs and a supporting nod for Vanessa Kirby are it's best chances? But the RT score could conceivably fall into "Rotten" territory soon, which would not be a good look. Phoenix's reviews are all over the place. Some are saying he's great, others are saying he's miscast and a drag to watch. So I don't know what to make of his Best Actor chances. It is now at 61%. By the time you read this, it'll probably be rotten. Not great Bob!

I'm so excited for this, but seeing some say "it humiliates Napoleon" is very concerning.

Ridley has spoken. He should do a movie with A24 and they can change the logo to A23 for the memes.
Anyway, seeing this tomorrow for a Thanksgiving movie night and still very fired up. Have a feeling the critics are very wrong here.

What's great about this is that he puts an implied question mark at the end of his sentence? Like even he's not sure if he said the studios name correctly.

At the end of the video, Scott waxes on about the cinematography of The Searchers, which he praises as the gratest Western ever made. And that might be something he wants to hearken back to in his rumoured upcoming Western.

I dunno, I like Brian Cox - a lot.......didn't care for Phoenix in Napoleon and even I want to tell him to STFU I always say when actors say nice thngs about other actors just take it as nice words and move on ........you never know their motivation, it doesn't "prove" anything, it's just blah blah blah unless they tell you WHY "Actor X" is so brilliant specifically (they almost never do that btw) But when an actor talks badly about another........it's just cringe tbh I am pretty sure I have never heard DePac say a bad word about an actor - and they're DePac ffs

Well, I didn't think Wock was that bad, but he wasn't what I'd call good either. So Cox's take isn't outlandish. He made some baffling choices in how he played Napoleon, that simply didn't work. Cox is old, has no fucks left to give and is honest to a fault. He's said worse shit about other actors in his autobiography (see his comments on Johnny Depp) Let the man cook He also follows in a very long and distinguished tradition of actors being less than kind about fellow actors. Daniel Day-Lewis saying Laurence Olivier would have been a better actor if he was less dismissive of Dustin Hoffman's "method". Olivier's "why don't you try acting dear boy" remark to Hoffman also being one of the most famous sneak disses to a fellow actor, that's entered into legend. Brando publicly talked shit about other actors all the time, most notably Burt Reynolds.
Robert Duvall has taken shots at some of Jack Nicholson's performances, famously referring to his work in About Schmidt as About Schtick. It was a breath of fresh air when Christopher Reeve, in an era where stars were not afraid of speaking their mind, publicly took Brando to task on the David Letterman Show for being a lazy sell-out. Robert DeNiro used a Playboy interview to diss fellow Oscar winner Paul Muni's acting ( saying Muni was hammy in the original Scarface & I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, and just hammy in general ).It was refreshing when Ray Liotta was asked on a talk show who the most overrated actor of the 80's and 90's was, and without hesitating for a moment said Clint Eastwood.
It was amusing when Michael Shannon went into a tirade about Mark Rylance winning the Oscar for Bridge Of Spies, because he felt Rylance did "nothing". It didn't diminish my respect for either actor. If anything, it made me respect Shannon a bit more for not being afraid to speak his mind, in an industry where people are cautious about giving opinions because they are worried about not getting jobs if they offend someone. Actors...they have opinions on their craft and fellow actors like the rest of us and have the right to express those opinions (good or bad), imho. I think the only time I've really had an issue with an actor talking shit about another actor's craft, was when Sean Penn publicly took shots at Nicholas Cage's acting choices in the late 90's. And that's because Penn and Cage were close friends, so that felt extremely two-faced and a betrayal.

Well Brian picked the right director to shit on one of his films. Here's hoping the equally outspoken Sir Ridley will fire back and we get some proper beef.

As i said before, Napoleon would have been an incredible film with a filmmaker who actually had care and attention for the subject matter instead of just using it as an excuse to make an action historical epic. A different filmmaker would have simply extracted a memorable performance from Phoenix.

Pretty much this ^........Ridley saw Napoleon as an object of derision - but Napoleon's story has many things in it that can't be derided - he's Napoleon not a fictional character or a minor historical one like Gucci .......I don't "think" Phoenix was directed at all by Scott.........I don't know that, but it felt that the actor was .......what's the word.........somewhat......... rudderless

It's a damned shame too, because I think Brian Cox and Ridley Scott are both immensely talented men, who could do great work together. Shit, I could imagine Cox crushing it as a Roman senator in Gladiator 2.
