LMAO at thinking Thelma & Louise had more staying power than American Gangster I mean, it does, but it also has a 15-year headstart. The end shot alone is more iconic than anything in American Gangster (or really anything else Ridley's done post- Gladiator), and the title itself has entered the lexicon of shorthand relating to a pair of women doing anything badass in life. But as I said, I wouldn't necessarily add a sweeping war epic like Napoleon by saying it's from the director of Thelma & Louise because there's more appropriate alternatives in Scott's canon to get those butts in seats. Everyone knows what American Gangster is thanks to Ridley and Denzel. Only wine aunts remember Thelma & Louise

Only wine aunts remember Thelma & Louise Letterboxd has a very young and male skewing userbase, and American Gangster has 197k watches and 39k likes to Thelma and Louise's 307k watches and 95k likes. Lower average rating too, obviously. Doesn't seem like it's being kept alive by old people. Thelma and Louise still has no place being mentioned in a trailer for Napoleon though Now I'm imagining a trailer for Ang Lee's Hulk using FROM ANG LEE, DIRECTOR OF SENSE & SENSIBILITY in the trailer.

Trailer looks good. The shot of them firing their cannons at the Sphinx gave me chills though.
American Gangster was a critically acclaimed, commercial success for Ridley that starred Denzel and Crowe. They've used that movie before in marketing some of Ridley's other films after AG. It's no surprise they consider it one of his "calling card" films.

Thelma & Louise is a classic. It was the 25th highest grossing movie of 1991, and won original screenplay at the Oscars. Nominated for Picture, Director, two lead actress nominations, and cinematography.
From the director of Gladiator was really all what they needed. For me, Matchstick Men maybe my favorite of his.

I'm sorry for derailing this thread, guys. My point was simply that if you're going to include "from the director of..." for so many films in the trailer (really, just Gladiator would have been fine), then why not include one of his most iconic ones? Anyway, let's move on, please.

I’ve still not seen American Gangster Edit: And I’ve seen Thelma & Louise thrice I would jump onto that wagon. It's a good one with a yin and yang type thematic mindset.

As someone who is ancient ..........and weirdly younger than all of you (ever see your taste in bands? Pfffft) - this has been a special day for me to observe: 1. An overpraising of that trailer ...I mean I liked it but ......some way OTT reactions to what that trailer actually was 2. Thelma & Louise is a great movie, but not as great as Messidor which it essentially copies and Americanizes 3. American Gangster is a good movie but it is a (far) lesser Heat - heck it's a far lesser The Departed ...calm down I love Ridley Scott .....but.......breathe deeply, count to 10.......see Messidor.......learn something ffs

Well looks like we have our movie of the year and future classic that will lose to the boring film twitter movie at the Oscars this year. Maybe Phoenix can pick up Oscar no. 2.
I will say I do think Phoenix's age is a bit of a problem especially since it seems they're going all the way back to revolutionary France. I was mentally kind of assuming they'd start with his already established as emperor and just do the big stuff like invading Russia and escaping from his first exile. That's a lot of ground to cover without it being a miniseries.
Wouldn't have minded CG de aging and it's a bigger issue with Kirby being so much younger than him, when Josephine being older was a very significant thing that tells you a lot about them.
Respect that they're not all attempting French accents though, if it's not actually in French what does it matter, they weren't speaking to each other in English either.

IMDb has a higher viewership rate on American Gangster. I'd still argue American Gangster is socially more relevant

Just gonna throw out of Ridley Scott's entire filmography, he only has three films that's been chosen to be preserved in the National Film Registry - Alien, Blade Runner, and... Thelma & Louise. But I also understand that American Gangster probably thematically fits closer to this film than T&L.
Anyway, Napoleon looks pretty good although part of me wishes they'd do French accents. Ridley's one of those legends that's still waiting on his Oscar, but he tends to get ignored often as well. If the Academy does take to the film, maybe Vanessa Kirby will get some traction as well.

Another very promising thing here is the line with Napoleon saying that others only see him "as a sword" when he wants to be more. Sounds like this depiction of Napoleon lives in a society and as we all know Phoenix plays characters who live in societies better than any living actor.

Yeah I thought Napoleon was in his 20s during the French Revolution no? "The French Revolution in 1789 pitched the defenders of the monarchy, the privileged aristocracy and the high-ranking clergymen against the partisans for a more egalitarian society, known as republicans. The insurrection crystallized with the abolition of privileges on August 4, 1789. Bonaparte was only 19 years old."
I feel as though Napoleon not being young sort of negates the whole dynamic he had with Josephine

If we don’t get to see Josephine cucking Napoleon I am going to be extremely disappointed

It would be best if you stayed away from my posts unless I reference you - which is not likely to happen, ever these days - what with your "Best edited scene of 1932" threads you do and what not .......also if you are going to reply to me, use more positive words: First, actually see Messidor, for one thing..........say "thank you so much pacinoyes, I'll check out that movie, I don't know it - sounds cool - you are always turning me on to good stuff - you Rock!!"be thankful.......have manners, respect your elders.........kiss a girl.......have a beer .........enjoy the Summer.......make some friends and stuff
