Could be great.....certainly has great set-pieces it appears....but how can anyone look at this and not think:
1. He's too old (or looks too old)
2. His speaking voice is a problem
Not saying this can't be swerved........... but it will have to be swerved.......

True.......but it's always easier (for me) to trust Scorsese more than Scott........Phoenix looks too old for the surrounding cast even imo.......but maybe not........I can see long sequences of him staring out over body strewn battlefields........ where his age is minimized by the grandeur of those set pieces and his speaking voice is too.......we'll know soon enough.......

Eh, Scott's not trying to noticeably de-age Phoenix with CGI, so he already has the advantage over Scorsese there. And I feel like it's easy to imagine someone like Napoleon as looking older than he was; nutrition wasn't the greatest back then, and he had already been the veteran of several conflicts. The only issue with age that I can see is that Josephine was actually older than Napoleon, which is not the case here. But Vanessa Kirby has a stateliness about her that makes me think she's older than she actually is (it blows my mind she's my age!), so it doesn't bother me that much. Going back to the film itself, though, some of these shots are impeccable and feel like top-shelf Scott. I can actually see some tributes to Abel Gance already. And the shot of those drowning troops in the ice! *chef's kiss*

"The French Revolution in 1789 pitched the defenders of the monarchy, the privileged aristocracy and the high-ranking clergymen against the partisans for a more egalitarian society, known as republicans. The insurrection crystallized with the abolition of privileges on August 4, 1789. Bonaparte was only 19 years old."

I agree with this guy on the trailer. Can't wait for this. I subscribe to AppleTV+ and looking forward to watching this and Killers of the Flower Moon. Phoenix is about 48 years old. I am fine with the casting, especially if they show his rise and fall.

Is this premiering anywhere? TIFF at least? The trailer was edited horrendously and I'm sure the final work is great given Ridley has never made a bad historical epic

really messy trailer. Hard to take seriously with the music choice and the slow-mo and aggressively murky visuals. I don't know... I hope it's good.

He has a lot of reactions vids but he always has some incrediblly detailed insight.

I really dug the trailer, can't wait to see the film, but... I'm not here for the Thelma & Louise erasure. Seriously, do people just forget that Ridley directed that?

I think it's more that the audiences who are going to see Napoleon are probably less likely to be enamored by "the director of Thelma & Louise" than the other films, which all carry an epic scope that appeal to certain demographics.

I totally get that, but I'd still think "director of Thelma & Louise" would carry more cachet than "director of American Gangster" at the very least, regardless of the demography. Could be just a personal gripe of mine, though... That will always be my personal favorite of his films.

American Gangster is much more recent and made a lot more money, and it is a historical film so it's at least tangentially connected via genre to this. I love Thelma & Louise as well, but I can easily see why it wouldn't make the cut in relation to the other movies listed.

We need the other snubbed Ridley movies in this lineup. Ignoring Hannibal, A Good Year, Robin Hood, Prometheus, The Counselor, Exodus, Covenant, and House of Gucci. Cowards!
Jokes aside, this trailer slaps.

LMAO at thinking Thelma & Louise had more staying power than American Gangster I mean, it does, but it also has a 15-year headstart. The end shot alone is more iconic than anything in American Gangster (or really anything else Ridley's done post- Gladiator), and the title itself has entered the lexicon of shorthand relating to a pair of women doing anything badass in life. But as I said, I wouldn't necessarily add a sweeping war epic like Napoleon by saying it's from the director of Thelma & Louise because there's more appropriate alternatives in Scott's canon to get those butts in seats.
