Pfeiffer win makes sense...... colorful character, a deserved career win. Maybe too light and "quirky" for the Academy? Hmm. I'm seeing it in two weeks! If Viola Davis and Hudson are her competition their Oscar wins may keep 'em back. Andra Day is one to watch. I so want Pfeiffer to happen (as a win/nominee/whatever, same goes for Kirby and McDormand but I think she's already got it in the bag). I'm just wondering if 'French Exit' is worse off as a contender now than it would've been in previous years. General audiences will relate less to the jet set crowd, what with a great chunk of the world being unemployed at the moment heading into a brutal recession, where I think they will be "omg get a real life" with the whole "they're poor-ish now" plot of film, not to mention the talking cat. Whereas 'Nomadland' couldn't be timelier and might end up capturing the zeitgeist of the moment best. I also think people are overlooking Amy Adams in 'Hillbilly Elegy', which I'm sure is dreadful, but catnip to the people who vote for 'Green Book'. Then again when hasn't the Academy been filled with the tone deaf jet set? They might eat up 'French Exit' and Pfeiffer's got a great distributor.

These are the people who made Renee Zellweger win for a mediocre/bad untimely movie no among the public saw or cared about.
I wouldn't care much about the timeliness of the movie or whether it connects or not with general audiences.

I think she is probably done. The Academy has never liked her enough to throw her a filler nod with a film with this kind of receptionm

So yeah....the last year the Best Actress category did not feature a British Actress was in 2011.That's a long stretch. Don't see how you can look at that stat and doubt Kirby.Mulligan's in the race now, and as a previous BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee, she could fill that slot as well.

Its Feb 12 limited release makes eligibility for the Oscars which they extended to Feb 28. As for Pfeiffer...... It's a very good perf, reminded me of Ingrid's two 1964 perfs, but the movie around her is an awkward botch. Idk if this'll come near the Oscars, GG Comedy may just be it....

Yeah, I feel there's just not gonna be enough passion for Pfeiffer, who hasn't been on the Academy's radar for so long, to get through on the back of this film. A Globe nod is likely, but anything more I feel is wishful thinking. Still, I hope it galvanizes people to cast her in something more suited to her talents.

Yeahhh, I'm thinking Pfeiffer is out. Also think Mulligan has a real shot here, especially more so than Kirby.

Pfeiffer ain't happening 1/ the movie will be released next year 2/ FRENCH EXIT has been receiving mixed reviews thus far . So She might receive a GG nod at best...in 2022 ! It’s releasing in early Feb, so it will qualify for the Oscars. I don’t see her going further than the Globes though, the film is too cold and aimless. Here’s my predictions Viola Davis - early buzz is good, it’s a showy transformative role. and the pics Netflix released looked great. Andra Day - great buzz, apparently a really good script, newbie and biopics are always a good bet at the Oscars. Word is that Paramount is mounting a big campaign and that it could be an across the board player. Francis McDormand - A lock for the nom, but probably too subtle and her 2nd win too recent to be a serious threat here Jennifer Hudson - I was pretty bored and nonplused by this, but it’s not a poorly made film. Just way too long at 3 hours. Still, she’s playing Aretha Franklin and could benefit from low expectations. Just not sure if she’ll get overshadowed by several other biopics in play here and also not sure if we’re actually going to see three black actresses get in. It’s been several decades since we’ve even seen two. Carey Mulligan - I think this is the Nightcrawler of 2020, which means snub potential is high, I just don’t think any of the other names make more sense atm. Adams is overshadowed by Close and the Netflix silence on the film is concerning. Winslet is definitely not happening. Kirby is a longshot that will need critics to overcome the fact that her film is divisive and has no other award possibilities. Streep is always a thread but I’m pretty sure The Prom will bomb.

I think there's something to be said for the fact we're about to get blitzed with three major projects dealing with historical female singers of color. Viola Davis is obviously going to be Netflix's big push (although I really do think that Chadwick Boseman's really going to be the one reaping the benefits of that film), while Jennifer Hudson is already hard at work on the campaign trail. Andra Day, meanwhile, is a complete newbie, but arguably has the best role of the three, as Billie Holiday is an insanely baity part. I don't know if we're going to see a record set this year, with three women of color making it into Best Actress (and two former winners besides!), but it's definitely possible.

I feel good about Davis, McDormand, Adams and Day. Can't decide between Hudson and Mulligan for that last spot.

Oh honey, I had rave reviews for Yvette Takes A Shower... "Never has an actress been so naked onscreen"; "A performance that bares more than the soul", and "It made me wet."
I also had a message saying something about a big lock... I think that's what that message said, and that letter was an L
I'm a definite. They might as well give me best actress now! I want it now!

I think this was wise. Davis vs. Day vs. Hudson was going to be a bloodbath and as far as I know there isn't another black female musician biopic set up for next award season. Day is instantly looking stronger (although we shouldn't rule out her film being pushed too).

Wise move. Someone had to blink, and the similarities between the Davis, Day and Hudson projects would hurt at least one of them in the same season. Two similar type roles/projects is managable.

Definitely the right call. The optics of having three projects about historical female singers of color at the same time would've made a fantastic narrative if all three had gotten in, but it's more likely that one would've missed out. Hudson probably has a better shot next year, anyway.

The right thing to do. I just hope Hudson will be a strong contender for the 2021 Oscars, even though August is not the best month for an Oscar campaign.

Stick a fork in Adams, her movie is getting panned and some of her personal reviews aren't so hot either (she's gotten some career worst notices). She also apparently doesn't have that much screen-time.
I might have to start taking Winslet more seriously now, given her personal raves.

Right now , I would bet my money on Viola Davis , one of the most revered and celebrated actresses of her generation. Plus , the Academy Awards getting more and more political with each passing year , they will definitely feel the need to reward an actress of color in the leading category (no wins since Halle Berry back in 2002 ; also note that Berry remains to this day , the ONLY actress of color who has won for BA). ps : I'm not saying this to throw a shade at the amazing Viola Davis. She always delivers brilliant performances and I'm truly excited about MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM (although , I feel it's going to be a bittersweet cinematic experience because of the late Chadwick Boseman ).So she could simply win because she damn deserves it !

Yeah, I've already said it, but it's hard to see past a Davis win. There's just no opposition that looks like a winner, and I can't see McDormand winning a 3rd so quickly after her 2nd. Adams might have presented a credible threat with an overdue narrative, but Hillbilly Elegy needed to be good, so scratch that . I'm inclined to believe the line-up might be: Davis McDormand Streep Kirby Day

Davis Day McDormand Mulligan Streep
Kirby Winslet
I don't see anyone out of that 7 making it.
