I mean, I think the younger generations being less up to going to the theaters unless its a franchise is always a bit of a factor, but essentially I don't think they did a great job advertising it. My girlfriend hadn't heard of it and had no idea that it was already out (and had been for two weeks at that point) when I showed her the trailer and when we went to look for showtimes, it was already out of all of our local theaters. We live in Queens, so it's not exactly like we're in the middle of nowhere either. She had seen no commercials, subway ads, or any ads on social media. So to see Ridley Scott say that Disney did such a wonderful job promoting The Last Duel, I have to disagree.
Plus, as you said - BO numbers are down due to lingering Covid, streaming services, and in some markets the price of movie tickets. I bought two tickets for Dune in IMAX and I paid nearly $65, and that's not including snacks.

So if House of Gucci performs well at the box office, what is he going to say then?

I'm not interested in seing the last duel, isn't The Crown after all, not epic as El Cid.-
I like when a story, even an adventure one, combine epic with romance and history. Unfortunately Ridley Scott "historical movies" are 100% his personal reivention of history.- Not even Gladiator his most famous "historical" film should be taken seriously, it's a big Zero on Roman History Class.-
Little but interesting stories about rich people who are still alive, or died a few years ago, on the other hand,is much more interesting, and his level of invention is very short (he could be demanded otherwise).-

Is different House of Gucci still exist and could demand the production company if there are too many liberties.- but who the hell is interested in a totally forgotten mediavel story, with very few historical accurencies.-

It is funny to me that he is at the forefront of this discussion at 83 on both sides - I didn't see TLD (don't care, don't care how good it is, I'll see it whenever)......but I'll see HoG a 2nd time soon in a theater at least - maybe 3 times . You can't make people care about what they don't care about - that's why some movies play well at film festivals and not in the real world - because the people at festivals are there to care etc. and there to judge. They can "manufacture" a hit - it's kind of awful actually..... HoG is hitting on this really exciting and weird thing - where people are responding (or not) to their IDEA of what the film should be rather than what the film itself is - it's a fascinating dynamic - and almost by accident I'm pretty sure where it is "a streaming movie in theaters"........ie people will say it's too long, but then say it should have been longer, say it's too campy or not campy enough (it's not camp btw), say it's awfully acted or brilliantly acted with no middle ...........essentially assess it the same way as me and my friends would talk about "Ozark" or something like that...... I think it will be a hit but it will be a huge hit when it goes to streaming..........there's not many films like it in this era ..........so you know he might be well advised to think of audiences in a different way and be more in on his own joke in general ...............like he is for HoG specifically actually.

I live in Rochester NY (third largest city in NYS), and The Last Duel is already playing at the dollar theater.
It is pretty wrong-headed of him blaming young people for his movie flopping. It has everything to do with the pandemic and how cheap streaming services are. You can literally subscribe to Hulu/Disney, Amazon, Netflix, Apple, and HBO for under 60 bucks per month. From there, you can literally watch Finch, King Richard, Dune, The Harder They Fall, Tick tick Boom, and even re-watch Jungle Cruise, CODA, In the Heights, Black Widow, and Cruella.
And yeah, plus Disney did a horrible job of promoting it.
Of course, the biggest problem of all, is that he's alienating a large share of the movie-going market.

So if House of Gucci performs well at the box office, what is he going to say then? Take a selfie with a selfie stick? Proclaim his love for Tiger King?

I mean yeah, not sure what is wrong about this. Lots of people just aren't interested if it doesn't have a cape or a space ship in it. Not talking about teenagers here in which case I wouldn't really criticize them, this is people in their 30's whose tastes haven't evolved since they were 16. This isn't "Millenial bashing", I'm in this age bracket.
As I have noted many times, it has not always been this way. The Red Shoes, Lawrence of Arabia, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Graduate, and The Godfather were top grossing films in individual years. Something changed. Even things like Rain Man and Forrest Gump in the 80's or 90's. You can personally not like them and think they were sappy, but audiences clocked to them because they were emotionally moved by them, not because they were part of a fandom.
