Invasion of the Body Snatchers - ****. Wowee, I've actually never seen this before. I thought it was absolutely incredible. And even though I knew the ending already (as probably everyone with internet access has), I was still holding on to hope. Now that marks great filmmaking. 56 or 78? 78.

Black Sabbath (1963) - 8/10 First Bava film I've been able to watch in the original Italian dubs with English subtitles. Sooooo much better. It's actually startling how much better the experience was watching a Bava film in Italian. The language just sounds so much better, and you lose so much of that in translation to English because the dialogue wasn't written with English in mind. The dubbed English dialogue in Black Sunday, A Bay of Blood, and The Whip and the Body especially sounded so rudimentary and commonplace. It saps so much of the campy fun out of his films and makes the performances feel curiously wooden. What a shame. Maybe one day I'll get to see those in Italian too...

I love camerawork here; everything is slanted and distorted. My appreciation for it grows each time. I gave it an 8 the first time round, last week I gave it a 9, and now I want to just give it the 10.

10. Summer of 84 (2018) - a lot to admire, but it's hard to ignore some of the more ridiculous things going on. Still mostly enjoyed it. 6.5/10

1 Malevolent (2018) 4.5/10 2 The Sound (2017) 3/10 3 The Faculty (1998) 9/10 4 Halloween (1978) 10/10 5 Fright Night (1985) 8.5/10 6 Cannibal Holocaust (1980) 6/10 7 Fright Night Part 2 (1988) 6/10
08 Dead Silence (2007) The film James Wan and Leigh Whannell made in between the much better received efforts, Saw and Insidious. I hadn't seen this since back when it came out I reckon. It definitely isn't a bad film, but it isn't at the level of those two films. The main issue is that it never really manages to build up any level of suspense, which Wan is typically great at. Also, the characters are quite dull and flat, which I blame on the writing rather than the actors. Still, anyone who is freaked by dolls and dummies will probably get some mild tingles from it. Unfortunately I'm not. 5/10
09 The Woman in Black (2012) This was a solid vengeful spirit horror film when I first saw it, and it remains a solid vengeful spirit horror film. I have few complaints about this film, but also, practically nothing to offer it any particular praise for either. 6.5/10

11. The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) - I guess I can understand the hate... but I had a ton of fun with it. Has one of the dumbest death scenes in the history of the art form, but it's all uphill from there. Entertaining with at least a few very strong sequences... including the best pool scene since It Follows. 7ish/10

^ Agreed, awesome opening credits though.
I just saw Planet of the Vampires, and I'm willing to give Bava more of a chance, but this one was rough.
