I have no idea why people are writing off Dolemite Is My Name either. It's on 97% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 38 reviews, so it's a decent sample size) , and seems to be playing incredibly well with audiences . It may or may not "go anywhere", but it's still viable for a Best Picture nod. Dolemite Is My Name has a 7.4/10 score on IMDb from 21,000 users. The Irishman has an 8.4/10 score on IMDb from 67,500 users. If Dolemite Is My Name played "incredibly well" with audiences, The Irishman is playing insanely well with audiences. And what's more, it looks like way more people are watching The Irishman than Dolemite Is My Name. The Irishman has completely eclipsed Dolemite Is My Name in every way imaginable. Critics-wise, audience-wise, campaign-wise, and buzz-wise. The only thing left is to see how the industry responds to the two movies. That's going to be a head-scratcher, for sure.

Scorsese/De Niro/Jane Rosenthal have all told this story about 500 times over the last two months. Friedkin got attached to Frankie Machine over 4 years ago and there's been no news on it since, so it definitely doesn't have much of a pulse.

Yep... like 12 years ago. Glad he made Public Enemies instead though... but would have been cool if he made it around 2012 (and I think he would've made more sense for it than Scorsese since he's more of a west coast guy). Kind of confusing that De Niro was still attached in 2007. I guess The Irishman didn't become a serious possibility until 2009-2010. Maybe Soderbergh can make it in 10-15 years with Clooney or something. Right now I'd cast THE GREAT Ray Liotta.

Great prospect but kind of a lost opportunity imo. De Niro wasn't STILL attached in 2007, I think that was exactly when he was attached.

It's amazing how he took those small roles and was able to craft a whole gallery over the years despite not being "bankable": Not only that, but he has to hold the record for being the most important actor in the debut films by important writers/directors - Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, Scorsese, Schrader, Toback (not that important a director but a writer and he stars in his directing debut) - that alone is uncanny really.

Really good video. It also peaks immediately after the events of Godfather Part II and is an elongated dovetailing of US politics in the 60s (notably an extension of what the Cuban Revolution meant to the mob subsequently) and Kennedy etc. To me one of the biggest counter-points to the feel of Goodfellas isn't even a big scene but it's one of the most insightful - Frank shows his nurse a photo of his daughter with Hoffa and is about to talk about it, she cuts him off - she doesn't care, she has a job to do just like Frank (she's taking his blood pressure) - no one cares, there is nothing to romanticize at all ........it's a brutal little scene in a brutal big film.

It looks like somebody used it as an ass-dildo and it came out with a lot of poop stuck to it.

Seems Pacino and Sly have become good friends the last few years. I love them both!

So the article says the problem was not the duration of the movie nor the limited theatrical release...
And then says the problem was the duration of the movie and the limited theatrical release.

I take it that Netflix put out the Criterion 'Making of The Irishman' featurette on one of their channels...so if you won't be buying the Blu-Ray, enjoy:
