I think the 4 negative reviews aren't even negative - like 1 is Armond White - ok, fine , 2 are like kid Marvel lovers and 1 is a review that says it's great but has no diversity so they rated it a "D"......

With 95/100 after 38 reviews, it's also the most acclaimed English-language movie of the year on Metacritic, edging out Marriage Story at 94/100. I'll still need to watch the film to know if Scorsese has really delivered, but I feel like we take him for granted at this point and don't appreciate how incredibly rare it is for a director his age to make a movie this acclaimed. Scorsese may well go down as the GOAT director.

I can't believe "Silence" hasn't got the same goddamn score, being the masterpiece that it is.

Hmmmmmm........let's see who is the most disgustingly absurd movie people in 2019 ........is it the people who say Robert De Niro has sucked for 20 years and is no longer relevant? (Utter nonsense search this board for laughs on that).........is it Angelica Huston, one of those people who now looks ridiculous just 6 months removed from her interview...........is it the people who said the CGI would fail.............is it the people who said they should of cast younger actors/do something OTHER than a crime film?............no, you see it's Netflix who funded the movie that no one would fund and gave complete artistic control and will in 25 days show it...........forever. The theater owners are beyond absurd at this point - it seems to me Netflix did exactly what they wanted and if the theater owners now regret it and want to kick somebody's ass about it look in the mirror then....... Netflix this year has blown the doors off (said in Michael Caine's voice (!)) what they started last year. The unmitigated gall ........have fun showing Cats asshats.

If I remember correctly, during the negotiations between the cinema owners and Netflix, for the big theater chains it had to be "90 days or nothing".
Now it's nothing. And I don't think that's a problem for Netflix...

Well since no studio in Hollywood would make the movie maybe the Theater Chains should be mad at them instead of the only company willing to put up the money and give Scorsese independent freedom. Netflix has every right to do whatever the hell they want and what makes the most sense for their business.

Not sure, I read 42 on Deadline. Who knows what's accurate or not. All I know is that I live in LA and the fact that I live in a major market and have to go out of my way to see this movie is silly. I can see it DTLA Drafthouse but the times are so limited that it can't be during the week cause I work and 8pm showing for a damn near four hour movie during the week doesn't cut it. In addition to that Drafthouse is a small venue so I gotta wait till the weekend and it has been sold out during that time period and I gotta pay $18 dollars. as Charlie Brown says.... ughhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Not a real matter if Netflix offered 4-6 weeks and the chains asked for more. I mean, Netflix was the only one who accepted to make that film so they treated it the way they wanted.
If the theaters need someone to blame, that should be the major studios for not wanting to do it. Of course every part is right: The studios thought they'd lose money, Netflix follows whatever policy they want for the movie they made and the theater owners won't have the profits they would if they showed the Irishman for 90 days.

For a guy who's conversed with the medium, Scorsese doesn't seem to be aware of Gabriel Byrne.

From last night's Santa Barbara Film Festival, Scorsese honored with a 'Kirk Douglas Award' which is like a lifetime achievement award. Pacino introduced him with this speech - which is wild and hilarious, and very heartfelt too. And for all those who've been wanting to see Pacino re-enact an entire Buddy Rich drum solo...
