There were no serious female contenders last year. There were some other years and they never gave a single f. Every year is different - depending on the potential nominees.

Guess I’m sticking with no major surprises. Nolan Scorsese Payne Glazer Lanthimos Gerwig not getting in WOULD be a major surprise. By any metric, she's a safer bet than Glazer. By most metrics, she's a near-lock.

I can understand if viewers don't warm up to Killers of the Flower Moon for the top prize, but why hasn't it posed more of a challenge in the best director race?

Because Oppenheimer is very much a success story on all levels for its director who has been one of the titans of the industry for more than a decade and who has never won an Oscar for Director or his film Best Picture.
