An alleged "leak" of the list - yeah, I know, I know - probably BS but........ the list of newly added top 100 - deleted from Reddit yesterday (?) - we'll see - I'mmina be pissed if this is real tbh ..........
Black Girl - powerful, heavy handed - only an hour - come on! Celine and Julie Go Boating - Great Chungking Express - Not top 100 level Get Out - GTFO ......it's not good people! My Neighbour Totoro - Not my thing but ..... Parasite - Great Spirited Away - Not my thing but..... The Gleaners and I - Not top 100 level Tropical Malady - Haven't seen!

The doubled voter body (800 to 1600) and younger avg age make me think Mulholland Dr (28 in 2012) will be even higher. Hopefully it boosts The Godfather (22)..... Results tomorrow

Jeanne Dielman is #1 on the Critics' list.
2001: A Space Odissey tops the Directors' list.

Jeanne Dielman is definitely a surprise.
The website isn't fully working for me to see the full Directors' list yet, so I'll have to wait on that.

The directors were much harsher on new stuff Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the highest new entry on the overall list at 30, isn't even ON the directors list I don't think

Yeah, it's a bit much to have several movies from within the last decade so high on the list. I adore Portrait of a Lady on Fire, but putting a 2019 film in my all-time top 10 for a Sight & Sound poll feels like some Film Twitter shit. That enough people did it to elevate the film all the way to #30 (above the triple of Mirror, 8½, and Psycho) is pretty wild. Especially when you consider the massively influential films not even in the top 100 (no Lawrence of Arabia? No Seventh Seal? No Buñuel at all?).
Still, great to see Black Girl, Killer of Sheep, Touki Bouki, and the very high placement of Cléo from 5 to 7. Jeanne Dielman at #1 is an incredible development, having something so avant garde lead the way for a poll that usually favors more classical narratives at the top of the list.

The Critics poll had both Moonlight and Parasite along with Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Get Out.

Now let's calm down people ........we can all disagree on this list .........but let's remember the amazing consistency of Mr. Denzel Washington - who has never had a single film - ever, anywhere - on any serious film list critical or popular (see below) ....
* 0 movies in the top 100 Sight and Sound (this year, ever, on any S&S list) - 0 movies in the IMDB top 250 (ever), 0 movies in the Letterboxd Top 250 (ever), 0 in the Critics TSPDT 1000 iirc (that's 1000!), 0 in the AFI Top 100, 0 in Rotten Tomatoes Top 100.....
* That's a huge rise for Mulholland Drive btw in @ #8 - with this and Meshes of the Afternoon @ 16 - that's quite a 1-2 placement of (awesome) weirdness
* Good to see Ozu holding his ground - you would have thought since this maybe skewed younger this would get knocked down

Yeah, no offense to any of the specific movies or directors, but seeing this it's clear this was rigged to put a movie by a woman in the #1 spot and as many as possible in the poll- you don't pass to zero movies by women in the top 10 ever and barely any in the top 100 to one topping the ballot and many appearing in the list out of nowhere. And wouldn't be the first time either- in 2012, there was a clear effort to end Citizen Kane's dominance.
There was also a clear effort to put newer movies on the list rather than it being dominated by 50+ ones, because let's be honest, this decade wasn't all that great.

decent list. The new entries aren't surprising given the voting block is twice as large and much younger than it was 20 years ago. A lot of these films have passionate followings and have seen a resurgence lately on letterboxd. Hopefully Portrait of a Lady on Fire places even higher in 2042 because it damn well deserves it.
And it's really nice seeing Varda on here but Le Bonheur puts Cleo to shame.
Kubrick x3 let's go!

Can't fit everything into a 100 but zero films from....... Altman, Lumet, Woody, Coens, De Palma, Wyler, Huston, Cassavetes, Clint, Hawks, Kazan, Elaine May, Spielberg! (*Note: Directors' List had Jaws and A Woman Under the Influence)
Oof!

The directors' list smokes the main list ....I mean I like the attempts at modernity - but it really shows some of the schism between the Art form and lovers of it - one is more films that "represent you" (or something) and one is films that work in the traditional aesthetics of the form. No Chinatown or Godfather Part 2 is pretty hard to take seriously for me tbh.......I'm not sure I'd like to hang out and have a drink with those "critics".......but things change......shrug

How did you manage to make this a topic about Denzel
It's 2022 and you are STILL doing this. This board has gone to pointless wars over this shit for years and most people calmed down and generally agreed it was a terrible idea to turn unrelated topics randomly into Denzel wars, yet here you go trying to bring back the bad old days! Wow Your insecurity regarding this man's stature is actually getting worse as the years go on. But playing along for the sake of it.... Training Day is # 75 on EMPIRE Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Movies Of The 21st Century (EMPIRE being a major thing on the populist side as a film publication) www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movies-century/

Jeanne Dielmann is nigh unwatchable. Portrait of a Lady on Fire over a Godfather Part II or Pulp Fiction or Annie Hall? A list like this espouses utter contempt for the artform.

I'll agree that the Directors' list to me comes off better, although its missing Casablanca for goodness sake. Neither list having Aguirre is also a major whiff.
Only 9 films total from the lists that I've yet to see:
On both: Shoah (#27 - critics, tied at #72 - directors) News from Home (tied at #52 - critics, tied at #72 - directors) Tropical Malady (tied at #95 - critics, tied at #62 - directors) - Haven't seen any Weerasethakul
Only critics Imitation of Life (tied at #75) - Sirk is a major blindspot Celine and Julie Go Boating (tied at #78) - Already on my watchlist Historie du Cinema (tied at #84)
Only directors The Mother and the Whore (tied at #53) La Cienaga (tied at #62) Cache (tied at #93)

The absence of PTA is also a bit puzzling from the main list - TWBB or The Master I would think would have made it - or 1 of them but both missing and the list being so modern is a bit baffling

it's fine. i don't get the varda push and i think there are more inspired modern choices (though i think all of them sans Moonlight are pretty good at the least), but lots of cool stuff happening as well like the greater focus on kiarostami and akerman. think i prefer the 2012 list. excited to see what there is past the top 100 for each.

Leading up to the announcement, I actually wondered if they might go with a female-directed film to be more "hip with the times," and Jeanne Dielmann did cross my mind as a possibility.
