Again, I'm cutting out what are generally considered lesser installments, so we can compare these two and choose the boards preferred edition.
As much as large swathes of Judgment Day are fantastic, and some of the effects still hold up to this day; I also find several stretches of it dull and self important. The Terminator on the other hand, does not suffer in this regard as far as I'm concerned. The '84 film for me.
If you have a much loved duo from the same series you'd like to see this done for, mention it below.

I think there was a time when this consensus was relatively equal - if not favoring The Terminator slightly. This was early 00s.
These are products of different eras, I feel. Even though only 7 years separate these 2 classics. The Terminator is part of the school of the 80s cult genre films. I don't think the original intent was to have it be that big a classic. Kinda like Blue Velvet or Taxi Driver I feel. Neither films were intended to be as popular as they became.
Terminator 2 is obviously (without saying) - the action/effects/blockbuster film explosion that came around later. It really became trendy to make action films in that era, but I think at that time it was the biggest of them all.
Nowadays, most people will say T-2. I'm one of them. I just think it's a heavier piece of metal, but a better metal. The original is very good, very original stuff at the time, but T-2 took me to the next level - it's a consummate film, the kind of film that had everything.

Two terrific films and I absolutely understand those who prefer the more home-cooked, smaller, grittier feel of the original one.
However, I usually tend to go with the more polished achievements and T2 is definitely my choice here. Bigger, better made, more ambitious, more emotional, more badass and awesome.

I watched both of these films when I was 12-ish and haven’t watched either since so I’m a bit rusty on both, but I do remember preferring The Terminator so that’s what I’ll go with here. T2 certainly has the better action, but bigger doesn’t always mean better, especially for my taste ... T2 was just far too blockbuster-y, whereas The Terminator felt like a smaller scale, more self-contained and personal sci-fi story, which just appeals to me more.

T1 was groundbreaking. But T2 was a far better movie.

Love both films, and the first's low-budget horror-dystopian vibe is great, but I heavily prefer T2's summer blockbuster action approach. It's just one of the greatest and most rewatchable actions film ever made, and the much lauded at the time visual effects are still impressive to this day.
