So I know these aren't beloved on the level of The Godfather duo, but they are for me, so here we are.
I adore Vol. 2 and it is quite high up my Top 100. It has a real emotional heft running through it, and while the combat set pieces are great, the dialogue driven portions of the film are just as good, if not better. All that said, Vol. 1 is on another level for me. I wouldn't consider any film perfect, but Vol. 1 is one of a handful of films, that are for me as good as film can get, or at least as good as I need it to be. I love every living breathing second of it. I genuinely don't think it fails on any level and it has to be among my most re-watched films ever.
From a Tarantino perspective, I think the fact he makes a mostly consistent level of film quality wise, has proven key to him remaining one of my favourite directors, as he seems to be 14 years past his peak now, and I suspect year 15 wont change that.

Vol. 1 is just a plain awesome kickass film which I watched on a regular basis when I was in my teenage years but I prefer Vol. 2.
It's got the brilliant fights and references and stylization but it also has the spellbinding Tarantino language which the first part deliberately pulls back on. I also love its strong emotional pull.

I see these films differently than most - I think combined they're way too long and the films also go into genres that don't work together to me - way too many set pieces and set pieces like a Bruce Lee film - and I grew up on Bruce Lee films and love him but I don't see the material matching those stylistic choices.
To me the setup, The Bride Wore Black stuff is the stuff of great drama like Truffaut did it and like I want here - not the stuff of a kung fu flick, none of it looks like the real world to me or a convincing fake one. I'm with it for most of Vol. 1 (until the end) but when Vol.2 goes on and on it isn't deeper to me, it's more inappropriate.
I know, I know, that's part of the fun but I'm not in on it ........to me it's a mashup of things that don't mash up - it's like a joke everyone tells you is so funny that you don't get at all - it's totally different from my wavelength.
Vol. 1 .........

It is a movie that sort of mixes and matches a lot. They're entertaining. I dont know about deeper or anything, but there was a time when I was into those monologues of bill's aching, dejected love for The Bride. And might've confused that with depth. Not saying theres no depth or anything , but its mostly a movie I like because of the genre. Lets just say i prefer Volume 2 because it kind of breaks down more entertainly. Part 1 was mostly just a prologue...reminds me of the original Star Wars film.

Well, QT considers them one film, not two. So there's no point in arguing....
As much as I love Carradine's performance in vol. 2, I prefer vol. 1. I find it much more entertaining.

Vol. 1 because it has less substance

Vol. 1 is straightforward kickass revenge fantasy with explosive action and a lot of wonderful callbacks and fun performances, which is all I want from this kind of film. I don't really care about them as characters and don't think there's enough here to sustain interest (mine anyways) in a longer and less action-packed film, which is why I've forgotten pretty much everything about Vol. 2 except the Uma Thurman / Daryl Hannah throwdown.
So Vol. 1 by a landslide.

Vol 1 mainly for the crazy / insanely entertaining final act. Plus it featured more of Lucy Liu & Vivica Fox (both scene stealers).

Gonna have to go with the popular opinion, Vol 1. Mostly because the fights are better and more frequent, and the character dynamics / performances are a lot stronger, and more colorful. I enjoy Volume 2, but it doesn't pack the same kind of punch.

1 has some of the best scenes (with Hatori Hanzo)... but also has that ridiculously bloated Crazy 88 fight. 2 has the best scene (Bud and Bill)... but it also has that ridiculous Michael Parks scene (I still dunno what that shit was about).
The series is WILDLY overrated, but I probably prefer 2. I honestly probably don't even like 1, honestly.
