I'm hearing that Joaquin Phoenix, Vaclav Marhoul and the producer of J'Accuse have been sighted at the Lido, with rumors of No. 7 Cherry Lane and Babyteeth also picking up prizes. I'm also hearing this jury has been divided.

Joker tying with Marriage Story for critics average score should probably silence detractors already.

I normally don't think festival prizes have too much bearing on the Oscars, but this one could prove important for Phoenix. What Joker needs is prestige to overcome potential bias, and what better way to get some than to win a big festival prize for Best Actor right off the bat. And the signs point to Phoenix winning here.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see it, but so happy that a documentary on Hector Babenco got to win an award tonight.

Twist! Luca Marinelli wins the Volpi Cup. Well done to Marinelli, but Phoneix really needed this to shore up his credentials as a likely winner. I was believing the buzz that he'd get this. Joker has too many things going against it in the first place, but a major festival award for Phoenix would have put him in pole position. Shit, he may still take it in the end, but I don't think he's going to be undeniable.

This is hilarious. Lucrecia truly doesn't give a fuck. This is what they get for not putting Zama in competition.

Yeah, that's the prestige Joker needed. Phoenix is coming for that Oscar.

The Golden Lion is JOKERRRRR Ok...this makes up for Phoenix not taking Best Actor, which felt the most likely prize. It's got enough prestige now to make a Best Pic run, and since Phoenix is the most praised aspect of the film, he will benefit in the Best Actor race.

I'm not a festival kind of guy - I don't catch up on these until later anyway but I'll say this if your looking for a "sign" or two - The Polanski and the Joker look like big idea films - BIG films - like the Tarantino was, like Irishman will be - not small TV-ish things like Marriage Story (didn't see it, sure it's great) or Just Mercy (didn't see it).....this way of thinking is going to play into Oscar pics I think where movies have some kind of scope to them.
1979 was AN losing to Kramer vs. Kramer .......it's 40 years later, the reverse kind of thinking is the zeitgeist - "scope" is in this year.
