Joker is one of the movies I regret not seeing again immediately. I had the chance but I decided not to. It really makes you want to see it repeatedly, because there is a lot to it that escapes you upon a first viewing.

I've read a critic about Joker that said De Niro's acting is quite bad in it. True story. Most important thing he's IN that great film Not really. He's been criticized so much in the last 20 years (not always for a reason) that when he stars in an acclaimed movie like this, he has to deliver. Same goes for the Irishman, which, in a way, is HIS film.

So one random Greek critic didn’t like De Niro’s performance.
I’ll file that under “who gives a shit.”

I'll tell you this much - I once posted some hilarious stuff about Australia in the "Who Is Australia's Greatest Actress?" thread - that I had to apologize for - look it up - because it offended at least one person and I don't think people could tell I was just kidding. So I really probably should just shut up here..........BUT: I had/have/had (don't ask) a Greek girlfriend who has taught me all the relevant curse words, all the relevant great food terms - diples and spanikopita bitches! - and all the relative movie terms too. Although I think it's possible that in Greek when they say "GOAT" you can't believe that because they may mean a goat. See - that's the kind of joke that got me in trouble - Geesh!!

Now I have to ask you about her And no, there is no Greek word "goat". When we use the term, we mean the greatest of all time.

Ew, nobody knows him, he's just a fucking minority who happens to have terrible taste. Why suddenly you bring this up? I just said Deniro had 2 great films coming, i didn't talk about his performances! Because you wrote Joker and the Irishman are tributes of his monumental works in the past. So I replied that, maybe Joker is indeed a tribute to King of Comedy and the Taxi Driver but his performance might be bad in it. According to one random critic, ok. He might have a terrible taste, he might be wrong etc. etc. But there is a slight chance that Bobby's performance is not good. And that matters, to me at least. I'm happy he's in two (posiibly) great movies this year and Pacino is also in two. But I want them to deliver and not get terrible critics for their performances. There are already people who, judging by the trailer only, say that De Niro will be sleepwalking in the Irishman! And as a matter of fact, this Greek guy's words about Bob are very (and I mean very) harsh. Of course I hope he's totally wrong.

not expecting De Niro's performance to be bad but anyone expecting much out of such a small role should be moderating that shit. It's just a tribute part, jesus

I think people sort of misunderstand how these legendary guys can be crucial in small parts like this - like all I heard about Pacino in OUATIH was - it's small, waste of how QT used him. Which is sort of true definitely but.........not. As I said in that thread it really means something that Pacino plays that part and he's quite memorable - ie the actor that will emerge in the new era plays the part of telling Rick Dalton about acting .........and De Niro playing this role in Joker means more because De Niro is playing it even if it's a nothing part.
Like I can't see how OUATIH and The Joker aren't sort of great adds to their filmographies even if I was let down by OUATIH's last third it's great to be a part of it. I mean this is arguably the 2 best American actors ever - interacting with the arguably 2 best American actors going for the first time.
Pretty cool......

The embargo on Waiting for the Barbarians lifts in an hour. Fingers crossed for my most anticipated film -- not just of the festival but of the year.

Now that all teh competition films have premiered, I've updated my predictions before tomorrow's awards.
Golden Lion - Martin Eden by Pietro Marcello Grand Jury Prize - About Endlessness by Roy Andersson Special Jury Prize - A Herdade by Tiago Guedes Silver Lion for Best Director - Václav Marhoul for The Painted Bird Volpi Cup for Best Actor - Jean Dujardin for An Officer and a Spy Volpi Cup for Best Actress - Mariana Di Girolamo for Ema Best Screenplay - Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story Marcello Mastroianni Award - Eliza Scanlen for Babyteeth
I'm wary of not predicting Saturday Fiction for anything, so that's my alternative. Based on reactions alone, there seem to be a lot of duds in competition this year. Barbera needs to go.

I love the idea of Jean Dujardin of all people being 2/3 of the way to the festival triple crown. Scanlen seems like such a cinch for the Mastroianni, but I'm starting to wonder -- could she possibly make a run at Best Actress, while the kid from The Painted Bird gets the Mastroianni? Although Marhoul is a very strong bet for Best Director as well.

I think if they have a category specifically for young actors/actresses they'll probably just stick her there to be honest, especially since there seems to be quite a few viable contenders for Actress (Di Girolamo, Johansson, Deneuve, Li, Essie Davis from the same film, Streep and Al Zahrani).

The Portuguese movie is a headscratcher for me. It's not bad at all, and it could have its fans in the jury, but it almost went unnoticed.

Imagine that top three actually making a play for Best Actor at the Oscars. It'd never happen, of course, but just imagine.
