Today, they announced that Lucretia Martel is the jury president, so I figured I'd put together a thread in anticipation for the festival that has been bearing the most Oscar-friendly fruit the last few years. So let's talk about predictions, rumors and expectations for the 76th Venice Film Festival, which takes place from August 28 to September 7.

I guess it's been the big rumor for months now but the Polanski film basically has to make its debut here given how much is riding on it budget wise, the historical importance as likely a farewell for its director, and his history, I don't know where he'd get a better reception than here. If that doesn't happen, it's a big red flag.

Martel seems a really odd choice for Jury President... Has she really had that much of an impact on world cinema?

Martel seems a really odd choice for Jury President... Has she really had that much of an impact on world cinema? She is insanely respected on the festival circuit, having appeared as a juror at Venice and at Cannes in the past, and despite not having the sort of mainstream appeal one would typically see in a jury president, her artistry is not to be denied, so I consider it a bold choice. Though to be fair, I think she's definitely one of the more obscure choices for the post in recent memory. Honestly, I think Venice owes it to her after forcing her to go out-of-competition for Zama back in 2017.

If that doesn't happen, it's a big red flag. There are a lot of rumblings that Polanski will makes its bow here, but I just can't see it running in the official comp. Feels like it'd be courting too much controversy, and I feel like in the hopes of making sure they can still market it in the States, they'd want to keep it as far from the scrutiny as possible. I expect it to be an out-of-competition film (which probably is for the best, long-term).

Yeah, and apparently Felicity Jones is getting an awful lot of buzz based off of test screenings. We've had two Best Actress winners match Venice's in the last three years; will Felicity keep the streak alive?

Lucrecia Martel as Jury President is just so good. Such an inspired and deserving pick. She deserves some god damn respect after the shafting Zama got from festivals.

Martel is such an inspired choice. Zama and La Cienaga are just fucking great, and the though of her directing the Black Widow solo movie was just too good to be true Also, please shoot me on the face if I have to endure Felicity insipid Jones winning an Oscar.

Martel is a great choice. A distinctive and essential voice in cinema.

Martel is without a doubt an ecclectic choice, but one that deserve it 100 %. No one is making movies like her and she appears constantly as a major influence in younger or contemorary filmmakers. A few years ago I attended a master class she did and it would be interesting who's gonna be with her in the jury because she gave me the impression to have a strong, autoritative voice in a serene way. FIGHT ! FIGHT ! And she just did the lastest Björk show, so, it's really her moment

There's a lot of talk that Joker might be bowing here. Very interesting.

Article from Deadline speculating about what might play at Venice. (Basically everything, lol.) Sorry off-topic for a minute, but I also wonder who will be awarded Telluride's Silver Medallion each year, so maybe one person from Untitled Noah Baumbach. I could see Laura Dern or Scarlett Johansson being good candidates to start their award campaigns off.

To distract myself from the Emmy nominations, here's a few recent articles about what's likely to go to Venice. From Screen Daily. You have to register to be able to read the one at Screen Daily. From Variety.

I'm starting to get a little concerned about whatever's going on at Fox Searchlight. Wendy, Downhill, A Hidden Life, Lucy in the Sky and Nomadland are all nowhere to be seen and most were expected to be 2019 releases. Jojo Rabbit had to settle with a TIFF WP (no Venice and Telluride). Should we expect some of those titles to be late TIFF entries and/or Telluride, or...?

That's a pretty sweet competition lineup. Not sure A Hidden Life quite qualifies there because it's already bowed at Cannes and earned strong reviews. It's too arthouse to get a fall festival boost like Green Book, The Favourite and ASIB did last year, so I'm guessing Searchlight will probably go for more of a Tree of Life/Amour/Cold War-type trajectory by appealing to a specific subset of Academy cinephiles and having it surge at the last minute rather than consolidating itself as a popular frontrunner. It's not much of a TIFF title. Downhill and Nomadland both wrapped just 4 months ago, so I don't think they were expected to hit the festival circuit this soon. Maybe the latter gets a NYFF debut if Zhao finishes it in time. Who knows what's happening to Wendy, but we've heard nothing about it yet so I wasn't really counting on it debuting at these festivals anyway. My best guess is Searchlight will take it to Sundance and Cannes next year since that trajectory worked out so well for Beasts. Jojo Rabbit skipping Telluride is a surprise, but Lucy in the Sky is the only glaring omission here since it's been in the can for a long time, already has a trailer out and was singled out by many outlets as a festival hopeful.

Maybe it was naive of me to expect but I’m genuinely surprised that The Irishman isn’t here — I guess it’s still not ready? Maybe this means it lands at NYFF?
Hyped for the new Kore-eda, Guerra, and Gray.
As for awards banter ... well, statistically speaking we should have a handful of BP nominees and maybe a winner here ... and other than The Laundromat, I don’t see any ... which to an extent is exciting, Venice this year doesn’t feel like as much a dumping ground of English-language releases trying to kick-off an awards campaign.

With The Laundromat, Streep has the potential now to be a Triple Crown winner of the major European Film Festivals, having already won acting prizes at Berlin and Cannes. Stay tuned.
