So critical reactions don't always jibe with what the jury feels, so for our brethren out there on the Lido this week... what are people talking about as the prize frontrunners so far?

So No. 7 Cherry Lane has gotten some interesting reactions on Twitter. Some people praising it as superbly imaginative, others calling it grating and staggeringly bad. Very interesting.

There’s hasn’t been much talk yet because there are still a few movies left. The point is this jury is tough to predict, especially with a president like Lucrecia. At this point the prize I feel is likely is Adam Driver for the Volpi Cup, unless they want to give it to Marinelli or someone who hasn’t shown up yet (like Thewlis or Rylance).

I think Dujardin has a chance for J’Accuse, if they want to reward the movie without giving a prize to Polanski. For best actress i would say Mariana Di Girolamo is the front runner.

"The Painted Bird" kinda sounds like "A Serbian Film" but set in WWII and in B&W.

David Thewlis could be a surprise Volpi Cup contender.

Babyteeth is a gem. I really hope it doesn’t go home empty-handed.

I’m not ruling it out but I’m not sure they’ll consider giving a 20-year-old the Volpi when there’s an award for new actors. Plus, Essie Davis would make a superb Volpi Cup winner. The whole cast is fabulous (there’s a couple scenes where Mendelsohn almost brought me to tears) but Davis is one step ahead of all the others.

Speaking of awards... I’m starting to think about my final prediction.
The Painted Bird, Marriage Story and Saturday Fiction are the titles I’m most confident will be awarded something, at the moment.

It screened today, but the public premiere hasn’t started. I think reviews will be published in like 30 minutes. I really liked it, although I wouldn’t put it among my favorites from this festival. Gong Li is a total threat for the Volpi Cup and I think it has a shot at Best Director too. It has a complex and dense plot but I admit that I wasn’t in the best mental state this morning when I watched it haha.

Man, Jessica Kiang is savage. Gong Li is being singled out though, so she’s still a threat.

What a great year for De Niro! Two great promising Films coming ahead and both of them are tributes of his monumental works in the past (King of comedy, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas) I've read a critic about Joker that said De Niro's acting is quite bad in it. True story.

So you have (arguably) the best American actor of his generation paying tribute to (arguably) the best American actor of his........and doing some of his most acclaimed work by evoking some of the best work of the earlier actor. Think about that......it's a pretty rare thing. Usually that comes off as a mere rip off ..........for Phoenix he's gotten some career peaks out of it.

So true, Don't you think he evoked that too in Gus van san's film last year (Awakening) ? Yup, good call and that's another one where you couldn't just dismiss it as a DeNiro rip off either - the performance stands on it own - he's carved out his own territory within ground that already had territory carved out in it. Almost never happens..........
