Ironically, unlike Ellen, I've only seen The Tragedy Of Macbeth once so far. She's apparently a far more dedicated Denzel Stan than me . Shocking, I know, but the industry is full of 'em. That is why he's considered by many of his peers to be the greatest of his generation and the GOAT ( with apologies to your guy DDL, a worthy peer in the era of Denzel).

What was it like being married to Gabriel Byrne?

Ellen Barkin REALLY loves Denzel's work in TTOM Barkin is showing incredible passion for this performance & film. Now she's just one actor, but she is a major one/well known one, so I think this type of passion from other actors does bode well for his odds at SAG. I really do think any one of Smith, Cumberbatch or Denzel could take it.

People often try to derail Denzel threads by making it about me, but I never thought you'd be one of them. It was amusing at first, but you can stop rinsing it now. Moving on....

Damn! Guess Denzel is now the new face of Shakespeare on film. No wonder he is trying to fasttrack King Lear. Can't remember the last time a traditional Shakespeare adaptation on film had this type of critical success and was actually a hit with audiences.

Has to be Branagh's Shakespeare run from 89-93 right? Thing is his Henry V was a critically acclaimed Oscar nominated film that didn't really make that much at the box office, where Much Ado About Nothing actually did well at the box-office compared to its budget and was critically acclaimed but wasn't Oscar nominated.
But yeah streamers/investors will be very interested in supporting Denzel's King Lear project, especially if another auteur filmmaker gets attached. Your mention of Barry Jenkins now has me wishing that would come to fruition. Jenkins' visual style complementing Denzel as Lear. And you know when he comes back to Broadway to do Lear, its going to be an event. An Oscar nomination for Macbeth on Tuesday will be great momentum as he heads into King Lear.

Congratulations to the "on set at 5:00am" duo, Bruno Delbonnel & Denzel for their Oscar's nominations. If only these two lazy a$$ that are Joel Coen and Fran did the same thing instead of shamelessly showing up with the croissants at 7:30am, they would have gotten their oscars nominations as well, I'm surprised Ethan Coen forgot to talk about this extreme laziness on his almost spot on review, he must be lazy himself, what a family !

Denzel's not winning this year, but this guy gets it. It's remarkable performance that redefines the role as a great screen performance (no disrespect to Ian McKellen aficionados, but whatever he's doing in that 70's TV adaptation is pure stagework, and decidedly not great screen acting). I think even Kathryn Hunter has remarked in awe that Denzel has essentially made delivering Shakespeare feel more organic and natural than she has from any other actor. Looking back at their Oscar Luncheon reunion photos from earlier, in the weekI feel like Kenneth Branagh must be somewhat proud of Washington and what he's accomplished as a Shakespearan actor.

I like Feldberg's interpretation of Denzel's performance and what he was going for. He plays his "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" monologue near the end like he's past everything at that point and ready for death. Like an old veteran in the yellow leaf of his life and career.
And Branagh should be proud. I only saw them together in that group photo I posted on here, but it was Branagh's open mindedness in casting Washington as Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing that exposed his Shakespearian acting chops to a wider audience. Probably helped him decades later when Coen reached out to him asking if he wanted to do Macbeth with him and Frances knowing he's done it before on stage and screen.

Another piece, this time from The Ringer saying Denzel gives the best performance of the Best Actor nominees (and best lead performance of the year) and should be winning the Oscar easily. The writer thinks there is a LeBron James thing going on with Denzel where his baseline excellence as an actor is so strong that it can go against him during awards seasons. Interesting theory.
