My current mood when I think about this movie's campaign: There is a plan....I don't know what it is, but there is a plan. Who knows maybe all the secrecy with screenings and the short teaser trailers they feel will drive curiosity in people to check it out. I mean we know they're not doing screenings because they feel critics are going to butcher the film, quite the opposite.

Hopkins and The Father didn't do super well at the beginning of the season either but the late surge was epic. This could follow the same trajectory.

Hopkins and The Father didn't do super well at the beginning of the season either but the late surge was epic. This could follow the same trajectory. It should be noted that last year was an anomaly because they held The Father and Judas out much longer than they would have if they were running in any other year, and there were at least campaigns in place from studios that are much more seasoned and know what they're doing, and A24/Apple aren't Sony Pictures Classics or Warner Bros. This might be a delaying tactic to capitalize on timing, but the thing is, Hopkins won not just because he surged at the right time, but because Boseman's film also lost steam overall. They can't hope to bank that both The Power of the Dog (the de facto critical favorite) and King Richard (the assumed populist choice for Best Actor) are going to lose steam in a season that isn't as drawn-out/extended as last season was. It's a risky game they're playing, especially as I think that Washington needs the critics on his side to coup his third.

To be quite honest, as Denzel being my favorite actor. It would be cool if Denzel wins his 3rd Oscar for a Shaakesperian performance, but I'll just be as happy if he got the nomination. Macbeth was really Coen and McDormand's dream project and they had Denzel come along for the ride. I think I was more invested (and he seemed more invested) in him winning for Fences since that was his baby through and through since the mid 2000s and plus it being one of the great American and African-American plays of all time.
If Denzel gets nominated this year for MacBeth, that puts him with only Olivier, Brando, and Olivier's "heir" Branagh as the only actors to get Oscar nominated for Best Actor in a Shakespeare role. That's quite the company to be in and would be a nice feather in his cap as an all-time pantheon/GOAT actor. I also think Denzel doing this will give him great momentum for what I think the one role/project he feels is left for him to do as a challenge and that's taking on King Lear on Broadway. From interviews I've read that's his main ambition as far as an acting challenge.

Possibly but The Father had such a strong grasp on nods - Actor, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Director, Editing........it was always getting nodded for at least those and that then carried it to Picture when Chadwick couldn't get picture.......which killed him and Davis....... What people are asking of Washington here is to carry his film to BP (not his strong suit)........or the campaign to carry the film .........that's not what The Father did though .....

It would be huge - no other American besides Brando............no American male in 70+ years.......... no African American, period ...........it's one of the great feats that could happen this year in acting...........it's historic .............. 1. Washington ^ 2. DiCaprio's 4th straight nomination - never done by any male 3. Cooper with double nods (though this is now unlikely to happen)

Exactly..ELITE company to be in..as far as Shakesperian actors and the Oscar are concerned. The fact that Denzel could say he's a part of that group would be nice bragging rights.

If he had more screen time, he would have won for LP. If he does somehow scores a supporting nod for LP then it is much stronger of a contender then people think.

I didn't necessarily mean Denzel would win like Hopkins. I'm just saying that Macbeth could overperform like The Father did, maybe get McDormand/Hunter in in the end. The reviews seem unanimously positive like The Father was.

I love Jenelle Riley. She seems so friendly, but in a genuine way. I feel like most stars respond well to that.

Helluva review by Katie Walsh. On Denzel's performance:
"There is no way to come away from this without the firmly cemented belief that Washington is the greatest working screen actor, and one of the greatest of all time"

Wow, this looks good. So basically this is getting ignored because it is Shakespeare. I can't see any other reason.

It's because it is an out-there, esoteric arthouse film being promoted by two studios who aren't really putting the effort in (whether this is a delaying tactic or not remains to be seen).

Wow, this looks good. So basically this is getting ignored because it is Shakespeare. I can't see any other reason. See how it goes in the next month or so. I know they had the LA Premiere of this at the DGA theater (which I'm sure Academy members attended) and they've had a few SAG screenings as well last week. I seen some people comment that this could be a Phantom Thread situation where it overperforms on Oscar morning instead of getting the expected Best Actor and Cinematography nods like most are predicting. They've been sending digital screener links to the guilds so we'll see how the industry responds to it.

The critics should be all over this and they are lukewarm in regard to awards.

The reviews for the film and Denzel's performance have been astonishing. It's actually quite mind-boggling how Denzel isn't the clear Best Actor frontrunner, because pound for pound, I think he's got the strongest reviews of all the contenders. Odd that critics groups have not been all over this movie and Denzel. Maybe they aren't keen on rewarding Shakespeare.
