The next Denzel? Ugh. I can't think of anyone at the moment. This person has to have universal appeal. Denzel is not looked at as a black actor. He's an actor...oops...sorry Nic, Thespian.

There won't be another Denzel..just like there will never be another Michael Jordan. They are singular. But I thought the actor/thespian who could carry the mantle moving forward and had sort of the same classically training as Denzel with mainstream appeal thanks to Black Panther unfortunately died in 2020.

This media blitz is nicely timed as voting opens up, but honestly, I wonder if it might be too little, too late. I feel like even Smith's kind of lost a bit of ground as Cumberbatch is surging along with his film as the prospective Best Picture frontrunner.

All I care about is the fact that I think Hunter wins NSFC and that helps her get nominated. Though yeah I think Denzel is pretty far behind Smith and Cumberbatch at this point. Probably behind Garfield too. Best picture could go either way. This can either pull a phantom threat or just get left behind.

God Chadwick! Still thinking about his death to this very day. He was just about to be a massive star, and then you know what happened. In general, though. I don't think there will be ever be another Denzel, just like there won't be another Streep and so on. These are actors of their moment, and we have to appreciate them as they are. They are irreplaceable.

Wasn't Hopkins nowhere at this point in last year's race till quite late? Not even saying Denzel can/will pull a Hopkins, but you'd think the last Best Actor race would give people pause in terms of speaking on certainties We don't really know anything in regards to how the industry feels, and it's clear critics awards influence can be overrated at times, otherwise the Best Actor winner last year would have been Chadwick Boseman or Delroy Lindo (who didn't even get the nomination). Or even Riz Ahmed. Critics have had their say, but I'm not confident any of the critics faves ( Cumberbatch, Spencer etc) will end up winning the Oscar. The media blitz is only timed the way it is because The Tragedy Of Macbeth is dropping on Apple TV next week, so this is really more standard promotion for a movie release than last ditch Oscar campaigning. His film is about to have it's real release (not 100 cinemas on Christmas day or whatever it's token cinema release was). Of course he'll be promoting now.

He was never sweeping, but he was still a fixture and had even won a few prizes, minor though they are, by this stage of the season. Washington hasn't won anything (at least as far as what mhynson has documented) and for a person trying to set up a narrative for a third win, you kinda do need the critics on your side (even Meryl won some critics' prizes for that piece of shit). It should also be worth noting that last year was an extraordinarily long season and there was the Boseman factor where a narrative was forming all on its own that isn't really applicable here (and as we saw, that narrative wound up failing at the outset).

Point being, there were arguably 3 actors ahead of Hopkins in the race during the critics awards phase. His race turned around with BAFTA . Whatever critics awards Hopkins won meant nothing to his chances. Denzel barely won any critics awards at all for Fences, but immediately jumped to frontrunner or co-frontrunner status when he won SAG (though admittedly he still lost the Oscar) . Who is to say something like that can't happen again (Denzel winning SAG and surging up in the race ?). Like I said....nobody knows shit at this point. They just think they do.

FINALLY a real trailer and a terrific one.
I haven't seen the movie yet (could have but not on the big screen..) but just based on the trailer, I can tell you that the lack of recognition (so far) for Fran is a F/cking joke.

Guess I'm going to go watch this again on the big screen before it goes to streaming next week. "My fate is set and I cannot 'scape it".

Fran is great in this. She's my second best performer in the film behind Denzel. I understand the praise Kathryn Hunter is getting because it's such an expressive and physically unique performance, but it's great character actor stuff in a small role. She's not better than Fran, just different. McDormand has to carry much more weight in the whole piece with her performance and does it very well .

When I watched the pilot for Ballers, the first thing I said when I saw him was why is this MFer trying to sound like Denzel. LMAO. I had no clue it was his son. I didn't find that out for several seasons. LMAO.

Denzel finally wins Critic Award for his performance. Named Best Actor by the Toronto Film Critics Association. Peaking at just the right time for Oscar? Maybe.
