Hmmmmmmm.......... Some observations: This doesn't look very hot............ Kidding, kidding. Winslet's role looks more multi-dimensional and lead-ish - she may get the privilege of being in the lead category where she can look forward to losing the Oscar to multi-talented thespian Queen (of Soul) Jennifer Hudson (because that IS happening in 2020 people). Unlike Portrait .........- a misunderstood movie imo that cleverly equated the lesbian angle to things sensuous vs. sensual (the movie is the former not the latter) - I'm not quite sure I see where this story needs to be a lesbian story. If you make the story about a male and a female or two men it would still have the same (weak?) set-up - (coming out of their shell or whatever like an Ammonite etc). I'm not sure that's not trite and I was looking for a hook that I don't really see here. But..........it's just a trailer....... You sort of encapsulate my thoughts on it. I mean it looks fine and I don't want to complain too much about there not being nothing original anymore since sometimes things don't have to be, but I guess I expected more. Even if it were between a male and a female, I can enjoy movies featuring a forbidden love, but I don't know this didn't really capture my interest aside from the two leads, and even then I don't know it seemed boring to me because it seemed to borrow from so many other movies like this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just a trailer.

That trailer was dull AF.The Academy will probably eat this up. If this were a normal year, I think it might do a little bit better than Mary, Queen of Scots because I get those kind of vibes from the trailer. So maybe Ronan's costar gets some traction but just misses, and a costume nomination, but unfortunately since this year is so messed up, I could see the Academy eating it up even if it ends up being as dull as it looks.

Lots of mixed reactions on Film Twitter (aside from the gay film community of course).
Looks too much derivative of Portrait and Carol and too uninteresting. I don't think it will do much awards season wise, maybe a nomination for Winslet, but that's it.

Well, God's Own Country was fantastic, so I have hopes that Lee will deliver something strong here. Agreed that there's nothing too exciting about that trailer, but it felt like more of a teaser than anything so I'm not having any doubts just yet. Winslet looks particularly strong here, we could be in for one of her best performances.
Also, while there are of course some similarities between the projects, calling it a ripoff/re-hash of Carol/Portrait feels reductive and even a little insulting.

Yeah, I'm not overly enthused by that trailer, which seems like it was genetically engineered in a lab from DNA of prior Oscar-baity trailers (I laughed when Ronan pushed that piano key while her husband talked about her melancholia). Lee's last film was very strong and had a vivaciousness about it that this trailer just seems to lack. It's not Carol that I think of when I see this, but rather On Chesil Beach.

It looks rather like an uninteresting affair, but I'm sure it'll get some awards buzz given who's involved in it. I will say I do find it amusing that Ronan's melancholic nature seems to be represented by her pushing down a single key on a piano.

(I laughed when Ronan pushed that piano key while her husband talked about her melancholia) Yeah, while I'm still supportive of the film as of now, that moment was pretty laughable. Hopefully just a cringey trailer-edit choice that plays better in the film itself.

They just announced that there won't be any press screenings for Ammonite at Toronto.
It's been announced right after the trailer's online reactions. Coincidences?? Don't think so.

Great trailer! I can totally see I'm going to love it, and you guys will say it's cold, detached and passionless.

crazy how much that trailer makes this look like an English-language Portrait of a Lady on Fire. And both films distributed by Neon, heh.

People comparing this to Carol and Portrait like that's a bad thing. If any movie achieves even half of what Portrait did, it's already a masterpiece. I think it's a great trailer that cops to the obvious lesbian thing without giving too much of the story or character dynamics away, and you also don't get much of a sense of the performances yet either. I liked, didn't love, God's Own Country, but this looks like it could be really lovely.

Description of the sex scene if anyone is interested "It’s well lit, Kate lies on her back while Saoirse goes down on her. Then Saoirse sits on Kate’s face and you see her ass in close up then her right breast when she finishes and lies down next to Kate."

Looks.... tasteful ?
I'm here only for the two ladies, Francis Lee is a bit of a hack, first was Arnold's Wuthering Heights and now looks like the "inspiration" was Sciamma

from the feedback it sounds like the film isn't anything like Portrait (even though it'll continue drawing those comparisons) but more like God's Own Country. The Variety review calls it "oppressively stark" and "demanding," and apparently it doesn't feature much of a score. Those are some of the reasons I didn't love Lee's first film. Now, something can be said for the starkness of that film. It's brutally authentic and unsentimental while still conveying emotional immediacy, so as long as Ammointe does the same I'll probably like (not love) it too. But these reviews have definitely made me more leery of its awards-potential. I think in such a stagnant year Ronan and/or Winslet could still get in (and maybe costumes), but films that are stark and demanding aren't often awards darlings. Looking back at God's Own Country, I can't imagine more famous actors would've made that an awards contender. in hindsight, "Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan to co-star in lesbian romance" is a misleading thread title that should have come with the massive caveat, "but it's directed by the guy who made a film about dirty gay farm sex that opened with a scene of a man sticking his arm up a cow's ass"

64% on Rottentomatoes. Good ink for Winslet but probably not getting any Oscar nominations

64 on RT after only 14 reviews??
This movies is dead award season wise, if critics were cold about it, the industry folks won't certainly have any passion about it or support it.
Winslet MAYBE could be some sort of fifth spot (if the competition is not too packed and strong and I can't see that), but Ronan and Lee are out for good.
