Interesting, since Winslet was almost in The Favourite. I can't find the quote but Lanthimos on Winslet said something like "It became clear pretty quickly that it wasn't going to work" sort of hinting that it wasn't just scheduling as they said.

Winslet's debut film was Heavenly Creatures - she has no problem playing lesbian. Maybe she just didn't jive with Lanthimos' eccentricities? This is why Bonham Carter dropped out of Breaking the Waves - Von Trier really freaked her out.
