Saw someone go, "apparently La La Land won the popular vote, but Moonlight won the Electoral College." haha

For the life of me, I'll never understand the hate La La Land was receiving leading up the show. It's about love, dreamers, and artists. It's so charming and innocent. It was a passion project by the youngest directing winner of all-time. It was his 2nd film after breaking out with Whiplash through Sundance. It was a great story in its own right. Somehow "the white man saved jazz" and the movie became racist. This just confirms that it's NEVER good to be the early front-runner. People will look to tear it down and look for an alternative. (The Social Network, Boyhood, La La Land). It's probably better in the long run, but still. Only speaking for myself, I really liked La La Land (it's my #4 or 5 of the year), but thought it deserved 6-7 nominations tops. It was heavily over nominated so it was nice to see more deserving winners in some of those categories.

What the fuck hell is going on? I want him presenting best picture next year with Warren and Faye, if both are still alive.-

(The Social Network, Boyhood, La La Land). It's probably better in the long run, but still. But it's sooo shallow and cliche. It's damn near boring in terms of characterization, dialogue and story structure. It has some of the most banal and flat-footed direction I've ever seen for a musical, and Chazelle has NO idea how to stage and construct a set-piece/scene that makes it exciting and compelling. It doesn't have a compelling human hook beyond the simplistic, feel-good "follow your dreams" aesthetic. I'm a huge (artistic) dreamer myself and the message is poignant and timeless, but it's handled in such a way where it becomes monotonous and doesn't explore anything beyond the surface. I understand that a simple, but personally resonating emotional connection is all that takes for a movie to be loved and declared a favorite, but being able to step back and distance yourself is important too. I'm so glad it lost and that a real human story with social, progressive relevancy took the top honors.

Considering this is not the kind of hate it was receiving, your personal opinion on the film is irrelevant. Chazelle was clearly loved enough to win Best Director.

Right Billy. I think it was a political win and seemed like some of La La Land's steam had run out. Clearly it is well thought of with its other wins, not a blow out but ok.
Ever since there have been 10 open slots we are seeing a bigger gap between Director and Best Picture lining up.

It's funny to read everyone's reactions to the great blunder on page 39 of this thread.

at Ryan Gosling's reaction. You have to love the guy. On the other hand, one guy I still hate after last night is Justin fucking Timberlake. Ugh. I saw him trying to bomb Emma Stone's interview and posing like an idiot with his wife. I realize he was a child star who was groomed by his mother to want to be the center of attention, but Christ, he's annoying.

Streep deserved a nomination for that reaction.

That Meryl Streep reaction is pretty emotional. Does anyone know whether she was supporting Moonlight or La La Land ? Both movies seem to be the kind she would be supporting, in their own way.

The ending is one of the most cynical I've ever seen in a "comedy" or "musical". At the end they both sell themselves to money and fame. She marries and has kids with a banal and successful man that she clearly doesn't passionately love (I think he might be a producer etc), Gosling (I don't remember the character's name) still hasn't found someone to replace her and when Mia thinks of the life she could have had with him, the kids etc, she knows she can't turn back time and goes away. I believe many middle-aged people thought and reconsidered their life choices after watching this films, especially women since such a path in their family choices si very common. It's a great and oringal film with profound, cynical approach.

Love this photo: Emma's like 'Congratulations but please don't come near me' and Viola's having none of this

According to Deadline it looks like Pricewaterhouse Coopers' Brian Cullinan was photo tweeting when he handed out the wrong envelope! Off with his head!

Wow...I don't even know how to react to that. The segment was already bad and now it turns out they might have needed to vet the surprise guests lol.

Who was that celebrity in the first column, second row? He had a priceless reaction in that picture. A kind of reaction as if he were thinking 'Oh shit, something is about to go down!' Both Steep's and Gosling's reaction were also the best!
