Great list. Great presentation. I had fun. I wanted Bill Murray to make it. William Hurt deserves a nod too, but he was never gonna make it. But 8 of my 10 made it!! Glad for that. But..... Oldman so low. Bogart so low. Finney so low. Olivier so low. But Cage made it. So did Gerard. No River Phoenix hurts though.
Don't agree with Gosling, Mifune, and Grant....... and Leo and Phoenix may have been a tad high (though they both have great performances). But I shan't complain.
I'm surprised Russell Crowe didn't make it. He was pretty sharp in the days, remember those flashes in Master and Commander.

What about best character, next? I'd love to do that, but I'd worry about the level of voting on it. I think it'd struggle to get a lot of votes. I think people would vote, but you’d probably have to wade through a field of 1000 different mentions.

I'm just thinking about the sheer level of potential ties now I am going to do directors next, and we'll see where we go from there.

Is anyone surprised by Bale + Hardy's absence ? There's a lot of internal competition for that brooding, intense actor dude who is sorta in the mould of Brando and/or DeNiro. Right now, hipster cinephiles only have eyes for Phoenix (who took a lot of the love people used to give to Bale in that generation). Bale seems to fall in and out of fashion with some people (no way in the real world is he held in less regard than Gosling). They may jump back on Bale's dick if he wins a second Oscar for his Dick Cheny film. Who knows. Hardy is too new on the scene I think. I mean, he only broke majorly onto the scene about 10 years ago with Bronson. You need to have had a presence for longer for people here to vote for you (I would guess that's why someone like Amy Adams didn't make the actress list).

Just got done reading it. I would have liked to have seen Hanks, Washington, and Mifune a bit higher, but otherwise I really can't argue about the top five. They're truly the greats of their craft and generation. Another superb list, and job well done Johnny.

Pretty baffling that Tom Cruise didn't make the list at all. I think I like his acting more than most on here but I would've expected he'd at least make a Top 50.

I'm sad that I didn't participate in this... when should we expect voting to start for the best directors of all time list?

You need to have had a presence for longer for people here to vote for you (I would guess that's why someone like Amy Adams didn't make the actress list). I can agree with this, although I think that Hardy's biggest hindrance is that a lot of his really choice stuff isn't that well-known. He did a lot of his best work in television, appearing in things like Stuart: A Life Backwards (which I'd rate as an all-timer in terms of TV performances), The Take, The Virgin Queen and, most recently, Taboo. It's actually kinda remarkable how diverse Hardy's catalogue is already. He even has a little stage cred to his name, including an Olivier nomination. In short, he's more than a muffled voice behind a mask.

Just got home and looking over this list . . . yeah, kinda expected. The crippling lack of Richard Attenborough and Harry Dean Stanton should make all of you pray for forgiveness come Judgment Day.

#40: Alec Guinness Points: 85 Last Poll: #26 “Essentially I'm a small part actor who's been lucky enough to play leading roles for most of his life. “ #39: Donald Sutherland Points: 90 Last Poll: N/A ” I was up for a great part but they told me: "Sorry, you're the best actor but this part calls for a guy-next-door type. You don't look as if you've ever lived next door to anyone." #38: Ryan Gosling Points: 91 Last Poll: N/A “Gene Wilder is my Marlon Brando. Gene Wilder will break your heart and make you laugh at the same time. And that's deep. There's something really profound about what he's able to do. It's transcendent. It's everything. He gives you everything at once and you have to decide what you feel about it.” #37: Peter Sellers Points: 92 Last Poll: #18 “Some forms of reality are so horrible we refuse to face them, unless we are trapped into it by comedy. To label any subject unsuitable for comedy is to admit defeat.” #35(Tied): Robert Duvall Points: 93 Last Poll: #28 “A young actor once asked me, What do you do between jobs? I said, Hobbies, hobbies, and more hobbies. It keeps you off dope.” #35 (Tied): James Cagney Points: 93 Last Poll: N/A “Once a song and dance man, always a song and dance man. Those few words tell as much about me professionally as there is to tell.” That Sellers quote is perfect.
