The fuck? So stunt people still get no love but this is a thing? Starving for ratings is fine but this is just lazy. Either nominate 'popular films' in the main category or don't do that at all.
Awful. Poor short film creators and sound editors and so on.

Oh yeah, and congrats to "Black Panther" for its Best Popular Film Oscar!

Dumb. So now "popular films" won't be rewarded for Best Picture because they have their own category. How are they going to determine popularity anyway? Box office?
It's just a rating grab so people can tune in to see if Black Panther or The Avengers win. What a joke.

I'm more pissed off about the three-hour runtime that allows for certain categories to be dismissed so readily during commercial breaks. The Oscars are a once-a-year event, and if they run long, maybe cut the stupid goddamn skits instead of robbing an Oscar winner of their rightful time in the limelight?

Is this basically like that BAFTA category where the public get to vote for a winner? LOL! That would actually be pretty wild though. Vote an oscar winner by phone or online. Sounds a bit like a desperate measure though. Guess there is a realisation that the Academy's taste has become so elitist and arthouse, that they need to invent a category to reward films people actually enjoy watching in significant numbers.

Is this they're way to avoid rewarding Black Panther in the main category?
But the run-time is the stupidest fucking thing. The best moments are when winners who are mostly unknown get their spotlight.

Wow, this is fucking horrible. Just cut the stupid skits and unfunny jokes instead. Make it like SAG. Have the ceremony be about the presentation and speeches.

I frankly am shocked that a ceremony as prestigious and dutiful about handing out little golden men to true works of art would take such a step

Yeah...this is terrible. I for one care about seeing each and every award and I know I'm not alone there. Taking the spotlight away from people who go under-appreciated by the general public throughout their entire careers is just insulting. And yeah, the entire concept of the "popular film" category is just downright stupid. It's honestly just degrading to the films that they actually nominate considering it's literally separating them from the "best" films. Not to mention there would be less motivation for Academy members to actually recognize genre stuff where it really matters if they're just stuffing them into this whole other category that guarantees they'll be nominated somewhere. Ugh. This is just plain stupid.

I was just thinking the other day that it'd been a while since they added or removed categories. Yikes. Everything about this is so fucking dumb. Achievement in Popular Film doesn't even make sense as a category name. All it does is reinforce the idea that there's movies for the masses and pictures for the ~*enlightened Academy scholars*~, which is pure bullsit. Like The Shape of Water, Get Out and Three Billboards AREN'T popular, audience-friendly films. What do these people think they're awarding? But announcing categories during commercial breaks pisses me off more. Sacrificing Foreign Language and Sound Editing in favor of pointless presenter banter kills a lot of the excitement of the ceremony, and is basically one step above presenting tech categories from the audience and not letting winners go up on stage. At the very least they should give us the choice to stream the unaired categories live on their website if they're not gonna be shown on TV. But congratulations to Marvel on all their future wins, I guess.

What the fuck are they trying to accomplish? Raise your hand if you know someone who doesn't currently watches the Oscars but is now going to because there's a popular film category. They're trying so desperately to get people to care who already don't give a fuck. Giving a consolation prize to a blockbuster and snubbing less glamorous categories isn't going to make you relevant, you thirsty-ass ratings whores.

I'm gonna take the Tommen approach. Raise your hand if you know someone who doesn't currently watch the Oscars but is now going to because it is 45 minutes less. It's a slog if you don't care to get through no matter what

I wonder if the eligiblity threshold will be box office related?
Like you need to have made over 100 million dollars domestic and/or over 200 million dollars worldwide to be even eligible to be in this category.
Some people in the industry will be pissssed if that's the case.
But hey, as long as it's still voted on by the Academy and not some sort of public, People's Choice style vote, it probably won't be such a bad thing. We'll basically just start seeing quality blockbusters win Oscars.

Pretty much. People who don't already care aren't going to tune in just to see if Infinity War wins that one category. Also, to add to what Sharbs said: the friends I have who care the slightest bit about sitting through the Oscars usually only pay attention to the first 15-20 minutes and then tune out/go do something else. Making it 3 hours won't change that because they're not invested in finding out who wins what, especially since they haven't seen most of what's competing.

There isn't really anything I can say that hasn't already been said here better than I can put it. What I will say is that if a 'popular film' is based off of box office then there's a good chance that Nolan will never have a Best Picture nominee again, just a shit tonne of 'Popular Film' awards.
EDIT: Unless you can get nominated in both???
