Only one nomination for Twin Peaks is a travesty.

Putting aside my disappointment in the lack of "Twin Peaks" (except for the wonderful MacLachlan nod, of course!), these are freaking great. Tons of Guillermo, tons of Spielberg, "Dunkirk", all the Ridley in the world, no "Get Out" in screenplay or direction (!). Just great. Although the song lineup is questionable, to say the least. And those "Greatest Showman" nods are also a bit icky. Love the weird Elgort nomination - at least some recognition for "Baby Driver". Although it would've been nice to see Sutherland for "The Leisure Seeker", considering they remembered Mirren.

Classic, the Globes, the most wackadoodle thing historically, get it right and nominate McDonagh for director and every US critics group missed it as they proceed with voting like sheep.
Quite wonderful that the years best film - the best of recent years imo - didn't you know.........direct itself.

Aw, I wish I could've watched the announcement live instead of being at work.
Big day for Fox Searchlight, and a major boost for Hawkins.
The All the Money in the World love is a pretty big curveball. Interesting that the Bening vs. Lawrence vs. Winslet vs. Krieps musical chairs for the last Actress/Drama slot resulted in... Williams. I was predicting Bening.
Speaking of which, Chastain has now received 5 Globe nominations in 7 years. Hooray. (Get Searchlight/SPC/A24 on the phone and have them buy the rights to John F. Donovan, make it 6/8 next year.)
Also, the HFPA's love for Sorkin is clearly alive and strong. Molly's Game hitting Screenplay over the likes of Get Out is pretty considerable. Hope it doesn't get Steve Jobs'd by the Academy; it helps that the competition isn't as thick this year.
Elgort over Sutherland is an odd choice, but then again, they did go with Collins over Beckinsale last year.
Poor Gyllenhaal. Guy can't catch a break. (The power of Merc lives on.)
And finally, I'm happy for A Fantastic Woman. Vega deserves far more love than she's getting, but the Foreign Language nod is a nice get.

The Big Sick snubbed entirely? Wow. Love the Plummer nod. Great to see De Niro and Pfeiffer as well...

Pleasantly surprised to see Ridley here. So much Dunkirk, The Post and The Shape of Water Yes, I think that Get Out and Lady Bird are definitely top 5, but I think it's interesting that Gerwig and Peele couldn't get Best Director nominations here. Aren't the Globes usually a good precursor? (I could be wrong, but this is pretty good for Spielberg who I was a little worried about after The Post didn't do so well yesterday.) Also, Get Out missed screenplay, so maybe it loses comedy/musical after all because I guess it's true they really didn't like it. I think it will still can win Best Original Screenplay, but this was a slight bump in the road for it.

Noms Tally The Shape of Water- 7 Three Billboards- 6 The Post- 6 Lady Bird- 4 Dunkirk- 3 Call Me by Your Name- 3 Thank you. Besides The Shape of Water having 3 actors getting in to The Post's and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missour's 2 actors, I would say they all did equally well, and this confirms my theory that The Post was going to do well with the televised and industry awards. I thought that maybe critics might embrace it because of it being about journalism and newspapers and saving the world, sort of, but then I thought that perhaps there might be too cynicism because of the way it was put together and perhaps too many comparisons to Spotlight. I don't think that will matter much in the industry though. Good day for Dunkirk. Rylance didn't get in, but it did get in Best Screenplay which was a major win. I don't know if that will carry over to the Oscars, but at least it got a boost today. I just noticed Call Me By Your Name underwhelmed like Get Out though, and really for one of the top rated films of the year, it feels behind The Florida Project, Get Out, and Lady Bird, so I'm leaving Guadagnino out because someone has to be left out, and right now he makes the most sense to me. Phantom Thread sort of disappointed as well, but I still think that if anyone will be a possible threat to Oldman winning the Oscar, assuming something does happen otherwise that Oscar is Oldman's, it's DDL and not Chalamet. ETA: Whoops! I guess it didn't. I don't know what category I was looking at. I'm still not fully awake yet even though I should be by this hour.

HFPA doesn't really respond to PTA. There Will Be Blood hideously underperformed with them, for instance.

If anything I'm glad to see The Shape of Water has the most nominations. It's really made an amazing comeback. I also say Jenkins may be a lock for a best supporting actor nomination at this point.

Only at the Globes did they go with the most boring, white, straight and male Best Director lineup possible. Also Chau's performance in Downsizing made me wince numerous times. Walter Chaw said it best in his blistering review: “If you're keeping score, consider that Ngoc is two distinct ways you shouldn't portray an Asian person: she's a ridiculous caricature of a dragon-lady archetype; and she's an industrious go-getter who teaches the lazy white guy the importance of watching out for your neighbour. She's an Amy Tan pastiche and Bagger Vance and there's no one laughing with her when she's doing her minstrel shit.”
