It's really shocking that Elgort got a nod, but Baby Driver didn't, and that The Big Sick got snubbed all over.

It's not that shocking if you think that they wanted to recognize Baby Driver in some way but didn't want to get near anything Spacey-related. The Big Sick missing out is uber-fucked, though.

Only at the Globes did they go with the most boring, white, straight and male Best Director lineup possible. Also Chau's performance in Downsizing made me wince numerous times. Walter Chaw said it best in his blistering review: “If you're keeping score, consider that Ngoc is two distinct ways you shouldn't portray an Asian person: she's a ridiculous caricature of a dragon-lady archetype; and she's an industrious go-getter who teaches the lazy white guy the importance of watching out for your neighbour. She's an Amy Tan pastiche and Bagger Vance and there's no one laughing with her when she's doing her minstrel shit.” Yeh, I'm very surprised not to see Gerwig or Peele get a nom.

Oh man, I really want James Franco to bring Tommy Wiseau to the Oscars, but I think that either Franco or Hanks will be left out.

I can’t believe The Big Sick got nothing. I thought for sure this was the type of film the HFPA would love.
Also, less surprising but damn no love for Mindhunter either.

Only 1 nom for Twin Peaks is absolutely repulsive.

The fucking Boss Baby lol.
Once again, pretty boring and standard picks for the Globes. Twin Peaks deserved a lot more, but I'm very glad Maclachlan got a nom.

I haven't seen Post or ATMITW (or Shape of Water, but not relevant) but I would totally swap Spielberg and Scott for Gerwig, Peele, or even Jenkins. Otherwise, I'm stoked for the Three Billboards love, and for Coco's noms. I like that Lady Bird and Get Out got in despite the director snubs. But I'm ESPECIALLY loving the Mrs. Maisel noms.

Ansel Elgort getting nominated is one of the worst things I've ever seen It's the first time I actually found him bearable on screen, but choosing him over Kumail (and I assume Sutherland) is bull.

Also, come to think of it, Amazon's slate this year turned out to be a huge bust. The Big Sick got shut out by the one group it had the potential to do the most damage with (even Hunter missing is shocking), Wonder Wheel is languishing in the season of Weinsteingate, Wonderstruck and Last Flag Flying kind of dropped off the face of the Earth following their festival bows, You Were Never Really Here is inexplicably getting dumped in February next year, Lost City of Z isn't being pushed. Their best hope is for SAG to revive Big Sick/Hunter and maybe get some Wonderstruck techs, as well as Human Flow in Documentary.
I'd never have believed at the beginning of the year that Neon and STX would be doing better than a company fresh off of 3 Oscar wins with a slate including films by Allen, Haynes, Linklater, Gray, and a Sundance darling.

Well some surprises, but no real shocks (except maybe Helen Mirren)
Surprised that Florida Project didn't get more, it really needed that transition … well they love Denzel so no surprise here. Three Billboards rises. Expected even more Get Out love actually.

I wonder if Spacey was pissed that Christopher Plummer got a nod.

Well, it's not like Kevin Spacey played a huge part of the movie, you can easily talk about loving the movie and being indifferent to his presence there. I don't think anyone would talk about Spacey if the movie got a BPC/M nod.

They went really white and male this year and twitter is having none of it. I wonder if this could be the beginning of a buzz that would help Lady Bird and Get Out (or to a lesser extent Mudbound and The Big Sick)

so are we ruling out Get Out as a frontrunner for Original Screenplay now?
and can we also agree that the noms for All the Money in the World are primarily political and basically throwaway nominations that have little to no bearing on the rest of the awards season? It's the HFPA saying "fuck you" to Spacey while saluting those involved with ousting him from the picture.
