Btw, the "Fifty Shades" rumors seem like bullshit to me - the film is rated R for language. And that's it, no 'sexuality' or 'nudity' or other stuff. Maybe the nature of the relationship will be somewhat similar (just reversed) but obviously it's not gonna be a sex film of any kind. I'm wondering if it'll be closer to The Master than anything else: how two people feed off of each other and take on aspects of the other, to the ruination of one and the liberation of the other.

I'm pretty certain that this will be very different from what we've seen in this trailer. It's great to have the best actor of all-time back and PTA is pulling a Mike Leigh with this film, it seems. I'm very excited, it looks expectional even if the trailer didn't WOW me

Hype's off the sky, people!
Doesn't look like a sexed up film though, as it's rumors suggested. If it is able to sustain it's momentum from now (it did seem like the "sexual" part in the psychosexual was the main reason for it to quiet down), and gets some award success, it's be great. As for the film it does seem like, it was of course fascinating. Y'all arent giving PTA's cinematography enough credit, thanks to the colossal Bridges he put up (pun intended) for our eyes. In short, lurvs this.

About damn time!
Agreed with the other post that the trailer didn't exactly wow me, but I'm still very excited to see this.

Hard fucking pass.
Also, just occurred to me now how much he looks (and at least here) and sounds like Ralph Fiennes now-a-days.

Well, there's our Costume Design frontrunner right there. I also think Krieps might be a Supporting Actress contender alongside Day-Lewis, and if the field's thin enough, Manville could be a contender. I also really love some of the shots (that eye close-up!). But it does seem as far away from what one would expect from a PTA/DDL collaboration as you can get, but the hints at darkness we see in this trailer make me excited to see what they've got hidden up their sleeve. Yes, Krieps really impressed me and seemed like she was almost co-lead. Now I'm wondering if I should predict her instead of Janney because that category is so empty. The only thing is, is that she's not really that known compared to Janney, and I'm not sure if Focus can get screeners out in time. Although if the rumors are true that it's already ready to be screened, then I don't think they should have issues with screeners. This was another thing that made me feel uneasy about Krieps because I wasn't sure if AMPAS would go for a PTA version of Fifty Shades of Grey, but it doesn't look like that's what this film will be at least from the trailer. I mean, there's definite darkness and something secretive going on, but I think Stephen is probably correct in that it will be more like The Master between them then Fifty Shades of Grey. It still might be too "cold" or "distant" or some kind of other bs for voters, but with DD-L's final performance, it should at least get them to screen it. Now the real test will be whether it's something they'll watch all the way through or at least the majority of, to get into other categories aside from actor. Also dare I write it, but just from the trailers, I preferred DD-L over Oldman, but I don't know if DD-L could actually win a fourth leading Oscar over someone playing Winston Churchill.

Although if the rumors are true that it's already ready to be screened, then I don't think they should have issues with screeners. I've always had Krieps in as a contender and I did suppose that she might get the PSH treatment (a leading performance being docked to supporting), although I guess it makes more sense to compare her to Vikander. And Supporting Actress is far more friendly to double nods for a film than any other category; Focus might run Manville well if she has a juicy scene or two. But Krieps seems like she'd the more traditional role they'd like, and she has a far more reliable studio than Janney does. Janney needs the critical momentum and for Neon to really put their backs into it. Fun little factoid: for every time Daniel Day-Lewis has been nominated for an Oscar, the times that he has won also elicited his film a single other win (Fricker, Elswit, Lincoln's art direction). The times he lost, the films walked away empty-handed.

Hm is it just me or does this look….bland? I mean acting wise quite fine but the story is not really… interesting? I was besides Day Lewis'S charismatic appearance really let down.

Yeah, not exactly fireworks, but it's DDL and PTA - I'm still beyond fucking excited.

Yeah, in that case, everything I'd heard about this is probably wrong. In addition to the sex, there were also rumors of Krieps' character getting Day-Lewis into hard drugs, but there's no hint of that here. This should be a lot more accessible to awards groups than I'd figured.

All I really needed from a trailer is proof that this movie actually exists. Say what you will, I'm in the theater no matter what.

Eh, looks good but not particularly exciting. I haven't really "liked" a PTA film since Magnolia though.

Saw this in the YouTube comments: "One night I'm gonna come to you, inside of your house, wherever you're sleeping, and I'm gonna stitch your coat." Anyway, this looks fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if we're only being shown maybe the first half of the movie, and maybe their relationship takes an unexpected turn where perhaps there's a shift in the power dynamic... it is interesting though that the film is only rated R for language, but if the rumors about the film are true, I think it's possible that it's more suggestive in its subject matter and may not actually be very explicit. I could be totally wrong and the rumors could indeed be bullshit, but it seems odd to me that that information would get around in the first place if there wasn't some truth to the nature how their relationship develops.

Let's remember the trailers for the last couple of PTA's films didn't have any footage from the film if I'm not mistaken

Gotta be honest, I'm not excited at all for this. I'm a huge PTA fan, but this one seems to be so bland and boring. Also, DDL is not winning his 4th Oscar, wake up!

Huge TWBB fan but I wasn't even looking forward to this for some reason. And now after watching the trailer it's easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Such a beautifully edited one. DDL looks freakishly great here. And so does the actress. Pumped!!!
