Thought a horror-specific thread would be fun for October.
Just watched Evil Dead (2013) and liked it quite a bit. Absolutely brutal throughout and never really a dull moment. 7/10

Gerald's Game, which I made a thread about. Really appreciated how Flanagan took a novel previously thought to be unfilmable and made it work, even if he went a bit far in hewing close to the subject matter near the end. Gugino and Greenwood are terrific.

I was in Raimi-Land as well with Drag Me to Hell. Still not really in love with it and the tonal changes aren't as seamless as he's accomplished in the past, but it's undeniably out of its fucking mind in a great way and that seance scene is horror fan Viagra.

I watched Perfect Blue a couple nights ago. I'm not entirely sure if it qualifies as horror, but it's close enough.
I thought it was too wild, too crazy in its constant scene shifting and perspective shifting. I never got connected to the story because it was all about narrative tricks to disorient the viewer (an intentional move to put us in the protagonist's shoes, but poorly done).
I liked it okay, I guess. It was fun to watch for what it was: A disposable late night thriller that allows you to turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. It is never anything remotely more than that, however. 6/10

Halloween (1978). Boring, cheesy, and responsible for the trope of horror movie characters making really stupid decisions. Before that, Get Out. Not super into it. I guess it got a lot of praise for the racial subtext, but to me it just felt like The Island with some jumpscares. Oh yeah, and I could see the slave metaphor coming from a mile away. Disturbing yeah, but very predictable, lessening its impact.

I don't get why people seem to fail to understand that there are stupid characters in plenty of films and that stupidity in horror films when used correctly is geared towards engaging viewers who will criticize their actions and are then forced to watch them die as a result

Just re-watched The Babadook last night to kick off things since my girlfriend had never seen it before. Still love it just as much as I did the first viewing. Amazes me when a horror film can make me teary-eyed. And Essie Davis gives one of the best performances of the decade, I don't care what you say.

Gerald's Game - solid stuff, brilliant performances and some nice direction, though marred by a terrible ending. 6/10

The China Lake Murders (1990). Solid TV movie with Tom Skerritt as a small town sheriff pre Picket Fences. Michael Parks was super creepy as the antagonist. Worth checking out.
