I'm in Venice and I saw "Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri". Holy shit, guys, this movie is incredible. McDonagh has done it again. It can sound like a simple story, judging by the plot, but the whole point of the movie is to take apparently banal or cliché situations and turning them into explosive, unsettling sequences. It is incredibly well acted: this is certainly McDormand's best performance since "Fargo"; Sam Rockwell KILLS it; Woody is a scene stealer as always; but the rest of the cast is amazing too (special mention for the actress who plays Rockwell's mama). The screenplay is nothing short of brilliant: black humor spread all over the movie, with killer one-liners by all the major characters, but it also has fantastic monologues (there was one given by McDormand that caused a freaking standing ovation DURING the movie). This movie mixes comedy and tragic in a very Shakespearian way, subtly and almost undetectably, leaving the viewer unsettled and nervous: there are scenes where you're literally laughing hard and suddenly have your blood chilled by a facial expression, or a line, or a detail in the frame. McDonagh toys with with the viewer's emotion and he's a master at it. He doesn't want to teach or preach (watch and learn, Clooney), he simply wants to make the viewer feel uncomfortable throughout.
10/10 and one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years. I'll kill critics and industry voters if this jewel doesn't gain traction during Oscar season.

wilcinema - McDormand's best since Fargo? Better than Olive Kitteridge because that would really be saying something ............can't wait for this movie.

Preference is personal, of course, but I'm pretty sure that most everyone will agree that this performance is one of her Top 3 with Fargo and OK.

So are all of my early Oscar predix for this justified? I've been stanning hard (despite not liking Seven Psychopaths) for a few months on it.
By the way, how is my boy Peter Dinklage? Big part?

I really hope you nail those predictions, I'd be super happy! They would be deserved. I think screenplay and McDormand are excellent contenders for a nod. Dinklage has a smaller role but he's just so good at it! I don't think he'll get nominated anywhere (unless it's an ensemble nod) but he's got his great moments.

Much will depend on what category they decide to campaign him. To me he's a lead but I'm not sure they'll push him there.

I saw it at a prescreening on Monday. I really liked it, and the crowd was completely into it. Even laughing at the parts that just weren't funny because the were so used to constant laughs. However...the ending is a little deflating. I could feel that exact point when it's revealed that the guy who Rockwell suspects isn't the guy supposedly. And when it ends with the two in the car and talking about turning around. They walked out and talked about the movie but quickly changed the topic. Imo I'm not sure about this being the sure fire Best Picture winner. I honestly had issues with the score and a couple moments you could feel a deleted scene had be taken out. I liked it, and can see McDonagh getting screenplay and Rockwell winning Supporting Actor, but I'm getting a vibe that something else is coming to take Best Picture away.

He could if the year was weaker but this is Rockwell's show. His character makes the biggest change and has some of the more memorable physical moments. If Billboards is REALLY loved it could happen.

I just got out of it. I loved it. McDormand is on fucking point and I wanted to applaud that monologue too. Rockwell and Harrelson are great too. Only thing is I was hoping for some closure but it might still be among my top films of the year. I’d put it behind In Bruges but ahead of Seven Psychopaths as far as McDonagh’s films go. It has a similar tone to the former, being emotionally heavy with perfectly placed bits of dark humor. And now I’m about to check out Lady Bird.

I gotta admit, I wasn't really into it for the first act... but it won me over at some point. I still have problems with it, but overall it was hilarious and tragic, and extremely entertaining.

I agree with Ban about the beginning and all the Woody stuff was dumb. The final conversation clinched this as being one of the years best for me

I would have to say that not only was that the best movie of the year, it was a staggering trump of McDonaugh's previous film work - this is basically a stunner the way The Pillowman was for his plays - taking everything he does well and deepening it, expanding it. Now I know people can tell me movies this year that maybe they'll like better, but for me - I can't imagine a film more reflective of what I love in cinema than this.
Obviously Rockwell and McDormand are spectacular, but so was Woody Harrelson, and deeply affecting too - what a great last 10 years for him to be a part of NCFOM, True Detective and this. Everybody McDonaugh had been compared to in his two other films is washed away by this film which will deepen on multiple watches too - and specifically people who wrongly thought the great In Bruges was a Tarantino inspired knock-off will have to admit now that no QT film has this much heart and scope along with a writing mastery and balance.
As great as In Bruges was this explodes it with some of the most shrewdly written passages it has been my pleasure to hear - including a beautiful one by Peter Dinklage late in the film, that goes well beyond what it has to.
10/10 loved it........short-list for best of decade.

Guess I'm gonna go against the grain and say that it left a bad taste in my mouth. I had so many issues with the screenplay and tone. All the actors are very strong and there are some fine moments, but it was so strangely off-putting. McDormand was great as always, and while I'm a massive Rockwell fan, I think he's been much better elsewhere. I dunno. I've been marinating on it for a few days and can't get over what the final product turned out to be.

Obviously Rockwell and McDormand are spectacular, but so was Woody Harrelson, and deeply affecting too I really loved the writing and delivery of Harrelson's suicide notes - just pitch black comedy and vintage McDonagh. There were a lot of moments like that throughout the film where I felt the urge to laugh and felt weird because nobody in my theater was laughing... I can definitely see how the humor would be offputting for some and won't work for everyone (my theater seemed taken off guard by the ending as well), but I'm glad this is winning so many audience awards. Can you see this winning Best Picture? I think Rockwell is probably the best chance it has at a win, but McDormand, screenplay, and Picture are all strong possibilities as well.

It won't win much I'm afraid because in this conservative year something pre-defined seems more likely, I haven't seen seen Call Me By Your Name or LadyBird but my guess is they are films that completely tie in with their niche audiences expectations for them. I know some will bristle that I would call these films (sight unseen) as conservative but I do in comparison and if I'm wrong I'll edit this post. They can give the award to Dunkirk and avoid upsetting anyone which I think is the goal this year. But 3 Billboards is an audience challenger in every way and its the best film I'll see this year I'm sure - some of my crowd was audibly displeased at several things McDormand's priest scene and her reaction to Harrelson's cancer or her use of profanity, name a film where the female lead talks like this and gets an Oscar for it - regardless of how artistic the Mamet-like mastery of the dialog is and that's fairly early on, not to mention some narrative dangling that actually makes the films themes more poignant for being that way. This film is actually the one that reflects the time we live in a way I can't see any other doing, it's one that I'd like to ask why an Irish filmmaker so clearly sees and an American one doesn't? His humor is never smug and always at the service of a more panoramic worldview and I certainly think its a film that deserves a screenplay win obviously - this is a beautiful, daring screenplay - a searing mix of the sacred and profane. I can't see it winning best picture in this year when the Academy is going to want to heal everyone in a simple, cure-all kind of way, it's too good. I don't think people are gonna fully get it until they see it a 2nd time. I have to go back to ILD, WoWS, Foxcatcher to find movies in its class and those weren't easily digestible on first watch either to say the least. I can certainly see Rockwell getting some attention finally and I think he may win a lot of critics awards, he's been passed over too much for a long time, though not sure who his competition is this year though.
