Finally saw this. So glad this didn't win BP now (even though I have no interest in Shape of Water and probably won't bother watching it) had it won it would have been one of the worst winners. I suppose it was pretty well directed, some of the thriller aspects towards the end worked okay, and the cast did their best, but the script was appalling melodrama to me which wasn't fitting for the serious real life subject matter. I can't even begin to recount how many times I sighed or rolled my eyes.
It's not often that I agree with the internet outrage brigade, but I also didn't really care for how Rockwell's "redemption" was handled. Not so much that he changed his ways after burning his face, but Harrelson's letter calling him a "fundamentally good person" after all he had done was silly, and the movie seemed to imply that he was going to return to the police force ("I found my badge") even after he spent the first half of the film going around and assaulting random citizens.

He definitely hit the nail on the head. His film isn't suppose to be conventional or have traditional character arcs. He makes a film where EVERYBODY has both good and bad qualities. Nobody is a complete saint or complete crook, and everybody slowly matures, hopefully.
